When it comes to love and relationships, there is a lot of good, but also a lot of bad. Some people live their best lives in love, others lose themselves due to mistreatment and deception. For those lost, some find themselves and flourish, others are not so lucky. For Ghana/Chicago-based Recording Artist Rie Osei, her experience in a relationship put her in a place that she needed to get out of. She talks about it in, “Simon Says“.
Produced by Portia Brajkovic for OWIA, Rie Osei takes heartbreak, loss of self, and disappointments, and turns them into a moment of reflection, and a chance to break free for better in, “Simon Says”. The relationship she was in found her wearing a mask, and it played a major part of losing her identity and changed behaviour in the relationship. The mask may have provided a false sense of hope, control, and protection, and it hid the real person that she is, but the moment of reflection found her realizing what’s happening to her, making her more determined to break out, and find the person she truly is. The mask is highlighted in the single’s Abdul Arafat-crafted artwork, and it pays homage to her Ghanaian masquerade culture. “Simon Says” will resonate with many, and it looks to be a fixture in the coming days.
