OLDIES SUNDAY: @PopcaanMusic – New Year (2009)

It’s December 31, a.k.a. New Year’s Eve a.k.a. the last Oldies Sunday for 2017! While many are looking forward to partying (or praying) into 2018, we’d like to present our last entry for the year. Our Oldies Sunday selection comes from the “Unruly BossPopcaan, but back when he was known as the “Prefect“. Titled “New Year“, this was produced by Notnice Records and featured on the “2010 Riddim” in 2009. In the track, Popcaan speaks on what he wants to experience in the new year including achieving great success in career, being able to better himself and others, avoiding imprisonment, and doing better than ever. His aim is to see the days of being hungry gone forever, while his plans include a new House, Car, and land “fi di New Year“.

2017 Faves: @Protoje – BLOOD MONEY (#1)

As 2017 comes to a close, we look back at a few songs that were favourites on the Blog for the year. While we can’t name EVERY one, we’ll give you 5 (in no particular order so hold off on the ego) to reminisce on, or get familiar with.

Ending our list today is the one they call “Diggy British“, Protoje with “BLXXD MONEY (a.k.a. BLXXD MONEY)”! Produced by Winta James and released in February, Protoje sees red as he calls out Corruption, Classism, Injustice, and those who practice it in Jamaica. From Government leaders to those names in high places, Protoje starts a revolution, and wants you to be a part of it. Protoje never watched no face when rinsing this tune this year as he has painted the scene red at Festivals, Radio stops, and even at the recently held Prime Minister’s Youth Awards Ceremony. A tune that lifted the veil for many this year. Thank you for checking out our “2017 Faves“(see the rest here). We hope you enjoyed our selections, and we wish you an awesome 2018! Check out “BLXXD MONEY” below!

As 2017 comes to a close, we look back at a few songs that were favourites on the Blog for the year. While we can’t name EVERY one, we’ll give you 5 (in no particular order so hold off on the ego) to reminisce on, or get familiar with.

Our second to last pick today comes from the “Dread and TerribleChronixx with “Christina“! The single is track #15 off his Grammy nominated debut Album, “Chronology” which was released in July. Featuring Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor as the Producer, and contribution from Blues Guitar legend Donald Kinsey, Chronixx speaks on believing in himself and working towards his dreams despite facing opposition from his then partner, Christina. The message in this is to never let anything stop you from pursuing your dreams. Leave those that doubt in the back, and move forward. A video for this would be lovely (tell Chronixx and his Manager Daddi Barnz that we have some ideas) however. If you missed our previous picks, check them out here. Hear “Christina” below!

Taking the 3rd spot today is Jeeby Lyricist with “Mobaby“! Inspired by Recording Artist Jidenna’sBambi“, Jeeby teamed up with Producer The Kash (who remade the Instrumental) in May/June to speak on the ills that affect his hometown of Montego Bay, St. James. He even speaks on them through the role of a Scammer. Many come to Jamaica thinking it’s all white sandy beaches, continuous partying, and chill vibes. Just like the rest of the World however, there are issues like crime and violence, corruption, and poverty. A song with a message. If you missed our 4th pick, check it out here. Hear our 3rd pick below!

With the pairing of Auburn’s delivery and Roe’s production, this was a song for the lovers out there. Still hope a visual is made for this someday. If you missed our #5 entry, see here. Starting at #5, is “Meanwhile” by the duo of Recording Artists Leno Banton and Royal Blu. Produced by JLL, the track was released in March and features the Artists going bar for bar, and pound for pound like two Heavyweight contenders in the ring. With a mix of lyrics, flows and melodies from the two, it would’ve been nice to get a collaborative EP from them next year (hint hint). Artwork provided by Paige Zxmbie and Khari Kamau. Bless up, check out “Meanwhile” below.
