OLDIES SUNDAY: Dorraine Samuels – The Woman In Me (1982)

In recognition of March being “Women’s History Month“, Oldies Sunday will be highlighting a few women who have made their contribution to the Jamaican music landscape in the early years. Today we close off the month highlighting a selection from a Queen of Jamaican Radio, one of the golden voices of Radio, and a Jamaican Icon, the late Dorraine Samuels! We look at her single, “The Woman In Me“. Produced by Samuels and Allan Rickards, this was released through Sonic Sounds in 1982. It was a cover of the 1981 hit single by Country Music Icon, Crystal Gayle. This marked one of the few times a Jamaican Media Personality tried their hand at a musical career (much like her on air “Hubby” Alan Magnus).

While Dorraine Samuels only released one single, it was popular back then and remains a memorable one by fans. Since “The Woman In Me“, she went on to enjoy a 40 year career at Real Jamaican Radio (RJR/RJR 94 FM) and Television Jamaica (TVJ) where she became quite the household name and a media Icon. Sadly, she passed away on March 26, 2019, but she left behind a great legacy that will continue to inspire many.

We hope you enjoy our selection today. Be sure to check out the track and share with a friend. Show us some love/follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.

.@KingMoses1403 Holds The Faith And Keeps Moving Forward On “Hold My Own”!

Thank you Father God fi lead di way…

Sometimes in life, you have to just hold the faith and persevere through the all the roadblocks that fall at your path. In the end, all you have is yourself, and the Creator to guide you. Today, Recording Artist King Moses delivers a positive message with his new video, “Hold My Own“. Directed by Jon Cintron and shot in New York, Moses shares his life experiences where he had to be self sufficient. He also gives thanks to the Almighty for bringing him this far, and encourages more people to fend for self over the “Style Riddim” produced by WaveKing. We believe this one will motivate listeners as the days can be a struggle. While many have had bad experiences aligning themselves with others, sometimes it’s best to just go solo and avoid further conflict. What do you think of this? .@_GhanaMusic Calls Out The Abusers On “Silence The Dread”!

Fraid me buss dem secret…

With lyrics that will have you thinking but also moving, Ghana is an Artist to watch this year and beyond. Ghana bites her tongue for no one however as she teams up with Producer Dale Virgo on “Silence The Dread“! Released through DZL Records, Ghana brings awareness to the many forms of abuse Women suffer at the hands of men all over the world. She also puts the spotlight on those who know about the abuse in the home, but turn a blind eye to it all. This song calls for more discussion on these matters, and more people to put into action that those who practice these types of abuse should be brought to justice.

Bringing a strong message during “Women’s History Month“, this is just a small part of Ghana’s rollout as she is finalizing her debut EP, “Gypsy Dread” to be released in June through DZL Records. If you were a witness to her live performances like at the recently held “9th Element” event in Kingston, then get ready for more as she plans to announce more shows in the coming days. She cannot be moved, muzzled, or put down when she’s lashing out against injustice! Lyric video by Hanna Phoenix, check out the track below, and share with a friend. OLDIES SUNDAY: Deborahe Glasgow – Don’t Test Me (1989)

In recognition of March being “Women’s History Month“, Oldies Sunday will be highlighting a few women who have made their contribution to the Jamaican music landscape in the early years. Today’s selection comes from the late English born Lovers Rock/Reggae Artist Deborahe Glasgow who, despite a short music career, developed a following, and contributed to a few classic tunes. We check out her 1989 single, “Don’t Test Me“. Produced by Augustus “Gussie” Clarke, this single was featured on her 1989 self titled debut album. It was also released as a single and a duet version with Dancehall Artist Shabba Ranks in 1990. With lyrics about not being a pushover and being confident in one’s self, the single was a rather motivating one back in the day. It got bigger with the addition of Shabba’s contribution, and was sampled by the late Notorious B.I.G. on Hip Hop group Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s remix to their “Get Money” single in 1995.

Having started her career in her teens, she stepped out of the scene to devote more time to her family. Sadly she passed away in 1994, but is still remembered for her contributions to Lovers Rock, Reggae, and Dancehall.

We hope you enjoy our selection today. Be sure to check out the track and share with a friend. Show us some love/follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.
