The city lights of Kingston flickered as if it was anxiously awaiting having its stories being shared at 6B Skyline Drive. While she anxiously waited, the mood was much lighter as movie enthusiasts and creatives filled every corner of Skyline Levels for New Wave’s Movie Night. Blankets, pillows, and folding chairs lined every corner creating an intimate atmosphere to witness the cinematic genius about to unfold.

The night’s agenda saw the viewing of three films, Nile Saulter’sFever Dream“, the premiere of Joshua Paul’s short film “Kinto“, and the feature presentation by Storm Saulter’sBetter Mus’ Come“. At 9PM the lights dimmed to usher in the first short film, “Fever Dream“. The 12 minute film shared the endeavours of a Scrap Metal Collector whom though down on his luck, still dreamed of something more. The ending was one that left you wanting more.

After the first film, the featured Filmmakers sat down for a panel discussion where they shared the reasons they to tell these particular stories, and how long it took to produce them. For Nile, “Fever Dream” was his entry into a JAMPRO competition that took one day to film, a revelation that solicited gasps of shock from the audience. For Joshua Paul, “Kinto” was inspired by the window washers he passed on his daily commute to work. Production for this took 5 months, and filming was done in Kingston. The feature film, “Better Mus’ Come” was based on the Green Bay Massacre that took place in 1978. Storm expressed his dismay about learning about this event in a book, written by a non Jamaican, which later served as his motivation to bring the events leading to the massacre to life on the silver screen. The major challenges he faced were not with recreating 1970’s Jamaica, but the political opposition. Many of the key players at the time of the event were still alive or revered.

All three stories were well written and well produced. They all captured elements of the Jamaican story that needed to be told. They were raw, at times gritty and honest. Kudos to New Wave for this event as an avid lover of movies and Jamaica Culture, it was a pleasure to experience their display in such an intimate way.

The New Wave Movie Night was nothing like any other I have experienced. There was musical juggling, free popcorn on entry, a Bar, and a Vendors’ Pavilion where brands such as The Street Supply Co. andΒ 1ndividual had products available for purchase, and Kamila McDonald had copies of her book, “Wake Up & Live” on sale).

The film has secured aΒ theatrical run in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands under the Palace Amusement Cinema Company. The movie will be released March 30, 2016. The film will be touring in major citiesΒ throughout the US, Canada, and London. Starting with NYC on April 7th and then London MayΒ 26th.

Synopsis: He was her assignment. She became his diary. Detective Simone Williams, aΒ Jamaican immigrant to the US, dreamt of working undercover on a high profile case. SheΒ finally gets her chance to go undercover in an attempt to catch a notorious drug dealer;Β Winston Bailey aka Bucky. She falls victim to his charming personality; compromising herΒ assignment. Lines begin to blur as she gets in deeper. Over time, Williams develops a closeΒ bond with Bailey, and their loyalties are put to the ultimate test.Β The director; Diemiruaya Deniran, calls this film the Cleopatra Jones, meets Donnie BrascoΒ and much more. What makes the film so unique is it gives the outlook on the entireΒ undercover cop movie in a revitalizing way by flipping the switch from the clichΓ© male copΒ role by having a female play the role. The New Yorker also stated that β€˜Women of AfricanΒ descent usually don’t acquire these opportunities; with β€˜Diary of A Bad Man’ it changes thatΒ status quo.’

The film consists of cast members mostly of Jamaican and African American descent; JacinthΒ Sutphin; Actress, Model, and Writer who was born and raised in St. Mary, JamaicaΒ (Richmond), who plays the lead role of an undercover detective as Simone Williams. Prior toΒ the film she moved to the states to pursue her acting career and was very enthused to comeΒ back to her country of birth to showcase her work in the acting and film industry. Douglas A.Β Robbs plays the role of Winston Bailey aka “Bucky” who is the target for the undercoverΒ operation. Douglas is a Crown Heights Brooklyn native; who really loves the Jamaican cultureΒ and people as well. Michael Thor Love, plays the role of Sergeant Putkowski who heads theΒ undercover team and is excited to break into the Jamaican show business this year and toΒ also embrace the culture and people. Other cast members include: Kyle Moore, LaTonyaΒ Grant, Levar Dawkins, Richard Bird, TJ Thomas, Kellen Wingate, Jamek Grigg, Robert Murray,Β and Tanya Thompson.

Based on the name; β€˜Diary of A Bad Man’ it would be a concern for Jamaicans and persons ofΒ African descent that this film will be projecting a bad look on them, however DiemiruayaΒ continues to explain that β€˜This is art, and there are many ways to tell a story,’ he guaranteesΒ that when you watch this movie you will be blown away because in the film you get to seeΒ the bad guy in a different light; you however may not agree with his ways of achieving hisΒ goals but you will understand and may eventually agree to his cause of actions.

NEW VIDEO: @OnstageTV Interviews @PaulCampbellJA x @TheMykalFax

Onstage

With the premiere of the “Jamaican Mafia” hitting screens this month, actors Paul Campbell and Mykal Fax stepped on Onstage to speak on the film and more with Winford Williams. Here the actors spoke about the film, their roles in the making of the film, Mykal’s background and previous work in film, Paul’s achievements in film, thoughts on Jamaican movies with violent themes being released, preparing for their roles and more. With Jamaican films like “Shottas“, “The Harder They Come” and “Dancehall Queen” being very successful worldwide, I do hope “Jamaican Mafia” is the next film to make a mark in the record books. Check out the interview and trailer below and share your thoughts in the comments section.
