“Well y’know ..like.. usually, everything in my life – I plan. But music is the only thing… I feel like it’s SUCH a free thing. I don’t overthink it” – Campus Buss
As we come closer to the end of January, the new season of #PayAttention draws nigh. On Saturday, January 31 at C&C South Beach, 2 Brompton Road you’ll be able to catch live performances of a handful of Jamaica’s wide array of local rappers.
One of the 4 performers though doesn’t claim to cling to that genre but as a talented rising artiste on the scene, Jane Macgizmo seeks to catch the attention of many [even ours] w/ her free-spirited melody. Let’s get acquainted further…
Q: Do you think that the 2015 #PayAttention stage will be welcoming to you as one of the FIRST for the year? [July 19th, 2014 was the most recent show]
A: Well, this is my first time and I’m actually pretty excited to be a part of the #PayAttention series. I am nervous but I’m just hoping the music takes me to where I need to be with everyone enjoying the performance and my music.
Q: I believe you’ll resonate extremely well with your audience & core fans, what can they expect on Jan. 31?
A: They [core fans] can basically expect a sneak peak of my EP as I’ll be performing a few new songs from it.
Q: Is there possibly one track/video you’ve created which you could pinpoint and say: YES this embodies my entire work! Please tell us the meaning behind it, if you do.
A: Well, I don’t think one track can really embody my entire work because I’ll be focusing on bringing diversity. Since you asked, however, ‘Babylon‘ is a track about me breaking free from fears and anything holding me back to do what I love and be free. That is music.
Q: Let’s me be frank, Babylon is pure authentic greatness! I need to know, what puts you in the right vibe to make music?
A: Being able to transcend into Jane. She is the artiste deep within my soul that basically just comes about by putting me around good music, being able to get into myself.
It’s almost like a higher state of consciousness where I completely become one with myself. I can’t think of anything else while i’m in this state: just me and my emotions!
“Jamaica is a brand. The world doesn’t want Hip-Hop from us” – Jane
Q: What do you hope to accomplish for the rest of 2015?
A: Well I’m hoping to release my EP in May of this year so that’s really what I’m working on as well as hitting more stages to get much more practice. I may also even go on a small tour abroad to get more experience.
Q: So @Azaeliabanks lashes out at you [on twitter, most likely] because she feels you don’t represent as a BLACK artiste, how’d you respond?
A: I’m black.

Q: This question was tailored more-so toward the Hip-Hop artistes set to perform the same night as you but i’d love to know your perspective: Why is it that Hip-Hop in Jamaica isn’t yet on some worldwide renown level?
[via Andrew “Kawb” Bell]
A: Well it’s not Jamaican and honestly I feel like we can’t forget where we’re from. Jamaica is a brand. The world doesn’t want Hip-Hop from us, they want Reggae and Dancehall music. Suppose you give them a bit of everything, which is what I’m trying to achieve with my sound. The production of my music is directly infused w/ reggae because Jamaica is quite literally, a part of me.
