The buzz around the “Hill & Gully Riddim” may have slowed a bit in recent days, but that doesn’t mean that Artists aren’t creating future hits with it. While Di Genius hasn’t pressed the button on some much-anticipated singles, other Artists are looking to be a part of the official compilation. UK-based Artist Alicai Harley, who has been off the scene for a while, returns with her own recording over the Riddim. We hear her take on, “Anansi“.
On the “Hill & Gully Riddim”, Alicai Harley urges the ladies to be wary of the cunning ways of some Men in, “Anansi”. For those unfamiliar, Anansi the Spider comes from African and Caribbean folklore, and he’s a character that plays tricks on unsuspecting victims to have his own way, and causes mischief for his financial or material benefit. “Anansi” means “Spider” in the Akan language, and originates from Ghana and the Ivory Coast. On the track, Harley aims to avoid the Men who come to her with sweet nothings, only to leave her high and dry in the end. She also gets into storytelling mode and share an Anansi story, something that many of us grew up on, and is lacking in this generation. She even taps into the Jamaican traditions rocking plaid and dancing along with her cast mates in a music video co-directed with Emmanuel Okyere. Taking on the streets of Brixton, the video plays out in one of the market areas, a common setting for many Immigrants to sell their wares.
Despite her absence, Alicai Harley has been busy elsewhere. Last year she rallied up efforts to giveback to Jamaica after the effects of Hurricane Melissa, and has been getting into acting as well. We can expect to see her back on the music grind as an album is in the works, which would be the follow up to the 2021 release, “The Red Room Intro“. From Kingston 11, to the UK, and back again.
