OLDIES SUNDAY: Stanley Beckford And The StarLites – Soldering (1975)

Hey Blogworld! Today’s entry in Oldies Sunday comes from the late Stanley Beckford (1942 -2007) who headlined the groups The Starlites, The Turbines and The Astronauts. He was a Mento singer who garnered many hits and won festival song competitions with his high pitched, nasal timbre laced delivery and interesting subject matter.

Today’s entry is titled “Soldering” (pronounced “Sardarin” in patois) and in Jamaica it is used as slang for sexual intercourse. The song was made in 1975 and became one of Stanley’s biggest hits. As popular as the song was, it became one the many songs that was banned in Jamaica for its suggestive lyrics. This was covered over the years by Desmond Dekker, The Specials and even American singers Hall & Oates and sadly Stanley Backford was often not credited for the song because of the lack of copyright at the time.

Stanley Beckford passed away in 2007 after battling throat cancer, and while he is no longer with us his music lives on. Thank you Mr. Beckford.
