OLDIES SUNDAY: Ken Boothe – Everything I Own (1974)

Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from the impeccable Ken Boothe. Titled “Everything I Own” and released in 1974 by Trojan Records, this was a cover version of the David Gates penned and Bread performed single which was released in 1972. Ken Boothe put his own reggae twist on the song and laced it with his unique singing style. This song went on to have many other cover versions from artists including Boy George, Rod Stewart, Nicole Sherzinger and *NSYNC. Ken Boothe’s version however is considered the best version.

While the original song was made as a tribute to David Gates’ deceased father, many people (including myself) interpreted it as a romantic song. It became a minor hit for the band Bread, but became a number one song in the UK for Ken Boothe and one of his most beloved efforts.

This song hit me in a different way a few years ago, I was going through a bad relationship and was in a vibe where I wanted our differences to be worked out. Every turn was a bad one and I was not shown much respect (Yeah, sometimes we go through this…Life), but one day Ken Boothe came to mind as I was a big fan of his music and this song came on. While listening to the song this line played,

If there’s someone you know
That won’t let you go
And taking it all for granted
You may lose them one day
Someone takes them away
And you don’t hear a word they say…

Even though others may interpret it another way, these lines hit me (and I wish she heard them too) and I chose to walk out of the mess my relationship was in.

Yeah, not much of a story but this song always take me back to that moment even though I love it otherwise. Thank you David Gates, Bread, and most of all Ken Boothe.
