OLDIES SUNDAY: Wilkins – Margarita (1987)

Break out the outfits, it’s “Hispanic Heritage Month” on “Oldies Sunday“! Hispanic Americans continue to make significant contributions to entertainment, sports, and pop culture, and we have highlighted a number of them over the years. For today’s selection, we go back in time to check out Puerto Rican Artist Wilkins’Margarita“.

Produced by Michael Sembello and Randy Waldman and released through WEA in 1987, Wilkins sings for the love of his dreams in, “Margarita”. Armed with uptempo production, Wilkins shares that he desires her greatly, and despite seeing her in his dreams, those are moments he needs to relive. The Salsa single earned the Singer popularity since its release, earning him chart placements, and gold certifications in Latin American, the US, European, African, and Asian markets. The track was also remixed a number of times over the years. “Margarita” was featured on his 1987 album “Paraiso Perdido“, and the 1988 Film, “Salsa“.

Since the release of “Margarita”, Wilkins went on to continue a very successful career. He released over 40 albums before retiring in 2007, but has “unretired” a number of times through tours. Wilkins has built a legacy that will inspire generations, and he is to be celebrated. “Margarita” remains one of his greatest hits.
