OLDIES SUNDAY: @QueenOfReggae (Marcia Griffiths) – Melody Life (1968)

Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from the beautiful living legend and Queen of Reggae, Marcia Griffiths. Titled “Melody Life” and produced in 1968 by the late Sir Coxsone Dodd at Studio One, Marcia sings about not seeing the benefits in the long run for being promiscuous and she urges people to settle down with the one person who loves and cares for them. Such a beautiful song and Marcia Griffiths has such a lovely voice.

Melody Life” was a chart topping hit for Marcia Griffiths in Jamaica and recognized by many worldwide as one of her biggest hits next to another big hit, “Electric Boogie“. “Melody Life” has been remixed and remastered by Steely and Clevie in 1994, and has been covered by many acts around the world. Over her near 50 year career starting at 13 where she performed with Byron Lee and the Dragonaires, she not only made hits for herself but with acts such as Bob Andy, Freddie McGregor, Bunny Wailer, Busy Signal, and as a member of Bob Marley’s group the I-Threes with Judy Mowatt and Rita Marley. Marcia Griffiths went on to release 15 albums including “Marcia Griffiths and Friends” that was released in 2012 and has never slowed down in the work.

Marcia Griffiths continues to tour the world to perform and collaborate with many acts and receive top awards and honors including the Order of Distinction which she received in 1994. She is a living legend whose music will live on for many years to come.

Thank you Marcia Griffiths for this beautiful classic.
