OLDIES SUNDAY: @KingBeenieMan – Memories (1996)

Earlier this month American Rapper Kanye West’s 6th solo album “Yeezus” leaked, and the internet went crazy. One of the songs that leaked featured a sample from today’s Oldies Sunday artist, Beenie Man. Titled “Memories” and produced by Fat Eyes Records in 1996, Beenie encourages people to stop living in the past, speaks about activities that would happen in the “Wild West“, and a mix of why people would be ashamed of their skin colour and Africa.

Memories” borrows the chorus from Johnny Bristol’s 1974 single “Memories Don’t Leave Like People Do” with Beenie adding another chorus. “Memories” became one of Beenie Man’s many hits over the years and was also sampled by American Rapper Mos Def for his 1999 single, “Travellin’ Man“.

Beenie Man went on to have many more hits over the years and was crowned the “King Of The Dancehall“. He also had his share of trouble inside and outside the music fraternity but he has never stopped being one of the great acts to come out of Jamaica. Memories will live on forever, just like this hit single.

Thank You Beenie Man for this classic tune.
