Today’s Oldies Sunday selections come from two Lions of Reggae Music, Sizzla Kalonji and Jah Cure. Titled “King In This Jungle“, this was produced by Beres Hammond for his Harmony House Productions in 1998. In this song we hear the two artists speak out on those who wish to oppress people but stumble with the help of Jah. They also consider themselves Kings in a society that’s like a Jungle and encourage people to follow Jah and have more faith in the teachings.
“King In This Jungle” was a breakout hit for Jah Cure who was fresh to the music industry and a hit for Sizzla who was an established artist at the time. The single became a part of Sizzla’s “The Best Of Sizzla: The Story Unfolds” album which was released in 2002. Both have released many singles and albums (Sizzla: Over 70, Cure: 7) over the years and have spanned many hits. In 1998 as Jah Cure’s star was rising, he was arrested on charges for gun possession, robbery and rape and was incarcerated in 1999 for 8 years. During those years away he managed to keep his career going with the help of a recording studio that allowed inmates to create music. Sizzla has remained consistent in his career despite facing backlash from Gay Rights lobbyists for his lyrics, and a motorcycle/bus collision in 2011 that halted him for quite a while.
Today, both artists are staples to Reggae Music and have influenced many worldwide with their strong and positive messages and “King In This Jungle” is a memorable release from them.
Thank You Jah Cure and Sizzla for this timeless song.
