It all started on August 11, 1973 in The Bronx, New York, and now it’s more than a global phenomenon. Hip Hop turns 51 years old, and the world continues to keep it alive. It’s Pop Culture, it’s an influence for generations, it’s in the Olympics, it’s everywhere, and it all started with the Jamaican DJ Kool Herc. As a part of the celebrations, Canadian Media Personality/Journalist/Musician Nardwuar a.k.a. The Human Serviette caught up with the DJ for a quick conversation.

Hosted at the Beat Street Record Store in Vancouver, Canada, Nardwuar and DJ Kool Herc along with his younger Sister Cindy Campbell a.k.a. The First Lady Of Hip Hop spoke about the birth of Hip Hop, the records that Herc would play, the Influences, Herc’s achievements, The Bronx being the mecca, Hip Hop’s 51st year, and more. Hip Hop started in the park, and 1520 Sedgwick Avenue will forever be the landmark. There have been debates, but you can’t deny the Jamaican Immigrant DJ Kool Herc’s contributions, and his position as the “Godfather of Hip Hop“. The genre continues to evolve, and we appreciate the ones who helped to build its foundation, and contribute to its legacy. Happy 51st Birthday Hip Hop.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Matumbi – Empire Road (1978)

There are songs that have made an impact in the culture that may have fallen by the wayside over the years, but because of “Oldies Sunday“, they get a chance to reconnect with familiar ears, and connect with the new generation. Today, our selection comes from British Reggae Band Matumbi with the track, “Empire Road“.

Matumbi’s “Empire Road” was produced by the Band, and released it through the Harvest label in 1978. The track was a theme song from the short-lived BBC series of the same name, which was written by Guyanese-British Writer Michael Abbensetts, and starred Guyanese-British Actor Norman Beaton (Desmond’s), Trinidadian-British Actress Corrine Skinner-Carter (Eastenders), and St. Lucian-British Actor Joseph Marcell (The Fresh Prince Of Belair).

The series was set in a street in Birmingham, England called “Empire Road” that hosted a racially diverse mix of African-Caribbean, East Indian, and South Asian residents, highlighting the day to day incidents that occur there through the life of a Residential Property Landlord. The series made history as the first British Television series to be written, directed, and acted predominantly by Black Artists. The song highlights the clash of cultures from food to way of life in the community, but making a call for better living there. While the song was originally made for the TV series, it gained a lot of popularity to the point where it had to be released as an official single. The track was featured on the Band’s 1978 debut album “Seven Seals“.

Since the release of “Empire Road”, Matumbi went on to become one of the top British Reggae Bands in the 1970s and early ’80s. They released a number of singles and albums until their split in 1982, with some members having solo careers, and others joining The Cimarons and The Squad. “Empire Road” still has a place in the hearts of many, and holds a significant place in British Black History.

After 13 years, Vybz Kartel is a free Man, and is free for the world to know again. It has been over a week since leaving the Prison gates, and he’s ready to speak. Yesterday, he shared the screen with Isat Buchanan on his “Context Matters” Livestream, but earlier today, he make an appearance on Television Jamaica’s “Entertainment Report”.

Hosted by Anthony Miller, Vybz Kartel returns to the popular TVJ programme for the first time in over a decade. He spoke about life in Prison, life after Prison, his love life, his health, his grand return to the stage, and a lot more things. Fans were eager for the “World Boss” to get his first official Interview, and aside from Isat Buchanan, Anthony Miller was the right one to converse with. Here’s to more Interviews.

It’s always a celebration when it comes to new music. For Ghanian Singer/Producer Sofie, it’s also a celebration of life as her birthday is today. It’s a blessing, and she takes the time to bless others with her new single, “Krobo Princess“.

Produced by MikeMillzOn’em, Sofie recognizes her worth on “Krobo Princess”. The track finds her reflecting on a lover from her past, and focuses on self-worth, emphasizing that she is the most desirable, and doesn’t to fight to prove that she is quite the catch. Her powerful vocals back up her lyrics, and we get a track that taps into Afrobeats, Pop, and R&B vibes. The track was released through Plantain Waves, and fans of Sofie will be keeping this track in heavy rotation long after the birthday celebrations. Get familiar.

It’s been a few weeks since the last release, but “Cruff SZN” is still in effect. King Cruff has been making a lot of progress this year thanks to his releases, and aims to make a bigger impact for the rest of the year. This time around, he gives us the new single, “Vigilante“.

Produced by Just Ideas and Dyse, King Cruff takes the law into his own hands on “Vigilante”. He effortlessly handles the AfroPop production as he makes a few bold statements throughout. He continues to stand out with the flow and lyrics, and we can expect the new single to ring out in a few places in the coming days. He made the promise in our Short Film we did with him earlier this year that he will be consistent with the music, and we look forward to a project from him hopefully early next year.
