.@KiloKeemzo1K Shares A Story Of “Junior” In New Short Film

In a time when things are increasingly difficult, employment is on a decline, the cost of living skyrockets, and people are easily corrupted, many have found themselves doing all manner of things in order to survive. Recording Artist/Creative Kilo Keemzo seeks to highlight some of the realities in this world through Film, and sheds a small light on it in his new Short Film, “Junior“.

“Junior” is an 8+ minute story of “Junior”, a young Man who is raised in poverty in the Spanish Town area of St. Catherine. Living with a Mother who has seen what the streets can do to the young, she tries her best to guide her child in the best way possible as to not be caught up in crime and violence. Junior, while being aware of his Mother’s teachings, the temptation of fast money has found him dodging his daily education to become a part of a collective of Scammers. The street life can look enticing, but it can get dark quickly when you get caught up in it. Produced by KontrolTheTown/NetworkNetworth, the Film shares what can happen when things go left in the streets, and it’s a reality that many have faced. The Film features appearances by Tajshaun Rowe, Young Ganga, Stats, Nose, Simone Reid, and Nicole Watson. Short but effective, this is a must-watch.

Jamaican Music and Pop Culture will always go hand in hand. From TV Shows, to Film, to a way of life, Jamaica’s influence is strong. Recently, the Amazon Prime Video platform released “Road House“. A remake of the the 1989 cult classic that starred the late Patrick Swayze, the 2024 Film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor, and it finds the character Dalton (Gyllenhaal), an ex-UFC Fighter, who gets a job as a Bouncer in a Florida Keys Road House, and the trouble that finds him there. The Film features a soundtrack that is filled with a number of Bands who play Rock and Pop, but a familiar song, covered by Singer Natalie Bergman of Wild Belle, could be heard in a scene.

During an early part of “Road House”, Natalie Bergman and Wild Belle covered Jamaican Rocksteady/Reggae group The Slickers’Johnny Too Bad“. Produced by Byron Lee and released through the Panther Label in 1970, “Johnny Too Bad” was about a Gunman who was known to committing various crimes. The song highlights his crimes, but was given a warning that when it’s his time for his activities and life to end, there will be no escaping them. The single quickly gained popularity after its release, and was included in the soundtrack for the 1972 Jamaican classic Film, “The Harder They Come“, which starred Jimmy Cliff. The song was covered a number of times before Bergman’s, and included versions by UB40, Sublime, Dennis Brown, and Bunny Wailer. “Road House” is out now on Amazon Prime Video.

Conflicts Arise In Publik Report’s “Barrel Mash Up Family” Film

Immigration is big step taken by many people around the world. In the Caribbean, many find themselves in the US, Canada, and the UK for opportunities beyond what their native countries can provide. In the end, they look to take care of themselves, and their families. One of the benefits of Immigration for some, is the opportunity to send home barrels that would consist of food, clothes, and other amenities. When done correctly, it gives families back home to benefit from some of the commodities of other countries, but when done wrong, can cause conflict in the family. Filmmaker/Actor/Recording Artist Kemar Williams a.k.a. Publik Report wanted to highlight some of this in his new Film, “Barrel Mash Up Family“.

Starring Publik Report, Candice Russell, Rohan Fowler, and Actress Merty, “Barrel Mash Up Family” highlights how messy things can get when it comes to getting a Barrel from loved ones overseas. What started as a simple request for a barrel as the cost of living in Jamaica has gone up, turned into acts of theft, deception, and family members being at odds. These things happen often, and at times it can get worse. There’s nothing like getting a barrel from relatives, but sometimes that jealousy bug can get in the way of things. Care to share a Barrel story? Comment yours below, or tell us on our Instagram page. “Barrel Mash Up Family” comes in two parts, so get something to drink and snack on, and be entertained.

Sonya Spence’s “Let Love Flow On” Featured In “American Fiction” Film

It’s awards season, and if you’re in Music or Film, chances are you’re one of the people who is a part of an award-nominated creation. One award show many look forward to is the 96th Academy Awards. One of the Films up for a few awards is “American Fiction“. “American Fiction” stars Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, and Sterling K. Brown, and it focuses on a Novelist/Professor named Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Wright) who out of frustration, wrote a satirical book on stereotypical Black people, that turned out becoming a success which has good and bad outcomes. The Film was released in December 2023 in Theatres, but was made available digitally on February 6. The Film features a selection of music that was played throughout, but in an important scene, a song from Jamaica was the soundtrack.

During a Wedding scene in “American Fiction”, “Let The Love Flow On” by the late Sonya Spence was featured. Produced by Sonia Pottinger and released through High Note Records in 1981, “Let Love Flow On” was a Reggae/Funk/Soul single that got Spence’s name out there. Sonya Spence was an Artist on the rise in the 1970s and 1980s, but her career was sidelined numerous times through a number of ways (You can see our Women’s History Month write up on her and this single here). (Editor’s note: I was happy and saddened by Sonya Spence’s song’s inclusion in the Film. Many Creatives worked hard for moments like these, but some of them never made it this far because they were robbed of it. Her story is truly a sad one. May she rest in peace.)

American Fiction” is out now on your favourite movie streaming platforms. Will it secure any of the big awards? Stay tuned.

Jamaican Music continues to make a bigger presence in more of the things we enjoy, and we love it. Recently, Video Streaming giant Netflix released the Sci-Fi drama, “The Kitchen“. The Film stars British Rapper/Actor Kane “Kano” Robinson and Jedaiah Bannerman, and was directed by Kibwe Tavares, and Daniel Kaluuya, known for the Films “Black Panther“, and “Get Out“. Both the dub and single versions of “Walk Away” are featured on McLean’s 2004 album, “On Bond Street KGN. JA.“. Both songs have made significant marks in the careers of the respective Artists, and adds to the ever-stirring pot of cultures that Immigrants have shared with the British scene as highlighted in the Film. “The Kitchen” has already gained favourable reviews online, and is a top 10 Film on Netflix.
