OLDIES SUNDAY: Lennie Hibbert – Rose Len (1969)

It’s another “Oldies Sunday“, we’re ready to give you something that you’ve never heard before, but was a part of our great Jamaican musical history. For today’s selection, we go back in time to check out Musician Lennie Hibbert’s “Rose Len“.

Produced with “Sir Coxsone” Dodd and released through Studio One in 1969, Lennie Hibbert grabbed the Vibraphone, and created sweet music with, “Rose Len”. Backed by other Instruments, Hibbert gave us the type of music that you can sit in your easy chair with a glass in hand, swirling around some of the finest liquor in the collection, and enjoying a Cigar. “Rose Len” would be featured on Hibbert’s 1969 debut album “Creation“, which featured contributions from Musician Jackie Mittoo. “Rose Len” was sampled by the likes of Earl Sweatshirt and RZA, Ms. Dynamite, Wais P, Onyx, and Hollywood Dots The Onceler.

Since the release of “Rose Len”, Lennie Hibbert went on to make even more music. He was a Bandmaster at the Alpha Boys’ School where he started his musical journey as a youth, worked with the Sound Dimension band, produced with Harry Mudie, and even collected an Order of Distinction honour in the 1970s for his contributions to music. Lennie Hibbert passed away in 1984, leaving behind a legacy that influences many to this day. He has a hall named after him at the Alpha Boys’ School, and his sounds continue to show up around the world.
