Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from Singer/Songwriter Diana King. Titled “Shy Guy” and produced by Andy Marvel in 1995, Diana sings about being a very desirable lady who all the men are eager for but would rather the affection from a “shy guy“. She speaks on refusing to be with a fly guy, a “rough neck” and a guy who’s “loving everybody” and details what she likes about a shy guy. In “Shy Guy” she delivered the song in English and Jamaican Patois.
“Shy Guy” was the first single off her debut album “Tougher Than Love” which was released in 1995 by Sony Music, and the lead single off the soundtrack for the 1995 film “Bad Boys” which starred Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Two music videos were released for the single, one where she was chased by two men and the other features her singing on a runway and being watched by Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. “Shy Guy” went on to be King’s biggest single selling over 500,000 copies in the U.S., 5 Million worldwide and pushing both her debut album and the Bad Boy soundtrack to over 1 Million in sales. “Shy Guy” was also a top ten hit including scoring #1s in Spain, Sweden, and charting high in the U.S., UK, New Zealand and France. The song was also covered by Brazilian band Fat Family, R&B singer Mya, and Reggae acts Aswad and Easther Bennett.
Diana King went on to release more singles and albums but none has charted as high as “Shy Guy“. Prior to her hit she was featured on the late Notorious B.I.G.’s “Respect” from his debut album “Ready To Die” which went on to sell 4 Million copies. She also formed her own label ThinkLikeAgirL in 2010 and recently signed Singer/Songwriter Kat C.H.R. to a distribution deal. With “Shy Guy” nearing its 20th anniversary, it’s still a hit worldwide and is performed whenever Diana King tours.
Thank You Diana King for such a great song!
