OLDIES SUNDAY: Sister Carol – International Style (1983)

The month of March is recognized Internationally as “Women’s History Month“. In the Caribbean, many Women have made great strides, and they have contributed to shaping the future for generations to come. In Jamaica’s music scene, many Women stepped up and made a difference, and set the tone for other Artists to be inspired by. On today’s “Oldies Sunday“, we highlight a Woman who opened the doors for the ladies, and stood out among the crowds. Her name is Sister Carol, and we check out her track, “International Style“.

Produced by Delroy Wright, Hyman “Jah Life” Wright, and Percy Chin and released through  the Jah Life/Live & Learn labels in 1983, Sister Carol had the people listening with “International Style”. This was the early days of Dancehall, and the advent of the Female Deejay was in its growing stages. Carol was one of the Artists who knew that she could hold her own among the Male-dominated scene, and gave listeners a display of a style that was locally known, and Internationally accepted. From Jamaican to American, from Trinidadian to Haitian, from Spanish to Swahili, Carol stepped out from the norm, and not only flexed her diversity, but educated the listener. “International Style” quickly became a hit, and was featured on her 1984 sophomore album, “Black Cinderella“.

Since the release of “International Style”, Sister Carol went on to release more music, and utilized her Degree in Education to teach the people inside, and outside of music. Carol is still active in music, and she sometimes join her daughter, Recording Artist Nakeeba Amaniyea, on a number of singles. In a time when Dancehall was Male-dominated, Sister Carol was one of the many ladies on the scene kicked down the doors to make way for the Female Deejay. “International Style” remains one of her most memorable singles.

For a number of years, Producer/Recording Artist Iotosh has been putting in the work to make his name prominent in Jamaica, and various parts of the world. His career steered him into the direction of working with high-profile Artists, securing GRAMMY nominations, and generating great streaming numbers. His mission is not complete, and he has plenty more to do. Today, he shares his latest single, “Bad News“.

Iotosh handles the production on “Bad News” with release through his Sound Ting label, and he goes through the emotions while dealing with a loss. Over classic Reggae sounds, he expresses what many can relate to when it comes to dealing with the loss of a loved one. Losing someone you were close to is never easy, and we can remember the initial reaction, and where we were when we first heard the news. Iotosh continues to work on music that will tap into every vibe and situation, and we can keep our fingers crossed to see if he’ll finally release a project later this year. Here today, gone tomorrow. R.I.P. to those we have lost.

The saying goes, “Every ghetto yute waan rich“, and that statement couldn’t be more true as there are many who go through various avenues in hope of becoming successful. Many have ventured into entertainment and earned their riches, while others have flexed their entrepreneurial muscles and built their success from the ground up. Recording Artist Yaksta is one of those individuals who wants his riches the right way, and he shares his ambitions on, “Rich A Morning“.

Produced by PotSink Records on the “Bread Crumbs Riddim“, Yaksta has his eyes on the prize in “Rich A Morning”. He pictures living in a Townhouse, he wants to take his family out of impoverished areas, he wants to generate wealth, even if it takes a longer time to make it happen. He believes in working for what’s his, and will not allow himself to be corrupted, nor will he go against his morals for riches. Yaksta has been steadily making good moves in his career, and they have resulted in hits singles, bookings locally and internationally, and a growing fanbase that supports his every move. Yaksta is working on new music to be released later this year, and is possibly working on the follow up to his “22” album. Believe in the dream.

The month of March is recognized as “Women’s History Month“. Reggae Music, since its inception has had contributions from many great Women in every field from Vocals, to Production, to Performance. “Oldies Sunday” has recognized many Women during the month, and throughout the years. For today’s selection, we highlight Joy White, and her track, “Check You Daughter“.

Produced by Lloyd Campbell for Matador Production, and released through the Love label in 1975, “Check You Daughter” is an appreciation for the Rasta Woman. Joy White shares that she has gotten plenty attention and respect during her travels. She didn’t conform to the beauty standards that have been pushed in society, and she stands out with her Rastafarian faith and lifestyle. “Check You Daughter” gained popularity for White locally and Internationally shortly after its release, and added to her growing catalogue of songs.

Since the release of “Check You Daughter”, Joy White continued to release more music. She has worked with the likes of Bunny Lee, Donovan Germain, Sir Coxsone Dodd, Courtney Cole, The Revolutionaries, and toured with the likes of Sugar Minott, Derrick Morgan, Black Uhuru, Johnny Clarke, and others. Joy White also has a Daughter in Music, DJ Naz Gurlpower, who has been making strides in her own lane for a number of years. Joy White has scored a few hits over the years, but “Check You Daughter” is still recognized and celebrated by many.

On International Women’s Day, we highlight the Women who took risks, and made bold steps to make a difference in the world. Many Women have become game changers in music, including Dancehall Artist Tifa. Her career spans well over a decade, and she has quite the discography, and place in Dancehall has been secured. Earlier, she released the new single, “Say Yes“.

Produced by Kemar McGregor, Tifa makes a dedication to all the Women in “Say Yes”. For the Women who are successful, who are standouts, and who are disruptors, this one is for you. Tifa knows what many go through in everyday life, so she took the opportunity to big them up when they’re winning in life. “Say Yes” also pays tribute to a couple Dancehall stalwarts as she borrows lines and cadences from the classic “Hol’ A Fresh” from the late Red Dragon, and the production samples the “Bounce Riddim“, which was produced by Dave Kelly for the Xtra Large label and released in 2000. Big up all the ladies, and much love to T-I-F-A. Keep this one in heavy rotation.

Today, we take a trip to Ghana, more specifically the Cape Coast, to check out Essilfie a.k.a. Ess Thee Legend, who recently released her latest project, the “You Will Know My Name” EP.

Featuring 6 tracks, Ess Thee Legend is making statements with her 3rd official EP, “You Will Know My Name”. The EP follows up her 2022 “Luv Lyf” EP, and she taps into some good sounds here. “YWKMN” features R&B, Afrobeats, AfroPop, and Trap Hip Hop production by the likes of Robin Rozay, Insvne Auggie, Fortune Dane, and Almighty Trei, while Ess shares the spotlight with Rozay, Iyke Parker, Rie Osei, Titi Owusu, and Darkua on a few tracks. Ess The Legend has been on the scene for a number of years, and she possesses great vocals and songwriting abilities, and her energy has resulted in a sizable fanbase, with the potential for her to be a global entity.
