OLDIES SUNDAY: Prince Jazzbo – School (1972)

The Summer holidays are over, and it’s back to school time for the young ones, the not so young ones, and the young at heart. Class is in session on Oldies Sunday. Today’s selection comes from Prince Jazzbo (whose Birthday is on September 3) with the track, “School“.

Produced by Sir Coxsone Dodd on the “College Rock Riddim“, and released through the Bongo Man Label in 1972, Prince Jazzbo is getting everyone back into the mindset as it’s time to learn. He shares keys phrases like “Go to school and learn the golden rule“, “If you can spell, you will never go to hell“, and “If you read, you will succeed“, and he delivers with a vibe and the deejaying/toasting style that would have listeners dancing and rewinding. Jazzbo emphasizes the importance of an education, and you can never be too old to learn as well. “School” was a popular song for Prince Jazzbo, and an important one that some would play in late summer before the start of the new school year.

Since the release of “School”, Prince Jazzbo went on to release more singles that became hits, and important parts of the culture. Jazzbo left this Earth on September 11, 2013, and his music continues to connect with listeners around the world. People it’s time to buckle up, it’s time to learn.

Thank You Prince Jazzbo For This Classic. Sleep Well.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Beres Hammond x Marcia Griffiths (@QueenOfReggae) – Live On (1992)

Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from two legendary singers, Beres Hammond and Marcia Griffiths. Seeing that this is the last week in February and I haven’t posted a love song this would make a perfect one to end the “Love” theme for the month. Titled “Live On” and produced by Donovan Germain for Penthouse Records in 1992 on the “College RockRiddim.

Live On” finds these two singers talking about being there for each other through good and bad times, expressing the feelings they have for each other and proclaiming that even through old age they’ll still be close and live on.
