Dancehall Artist Roze Don has been keeping his name hot over the past few months thanks to his singles, and the energy he has been giving out has been appreciated by the fans. The year has been good to him, and we can expect that he’ll be a part of some high profile things in the coming months. In the meantime, he’s making hits like his latest, “Different“.

Teaming up with Countree Hype, Roze Don continues to stand out in every way in “Different”. From the ladies he interacts with, to how he gets to the money, to his way of life, he’s not copying the next person, and he’s all about elevation. Even In Bad Times, Jahshii Shows “No Fear”

They say your strength is truly tested when you’re faced with hard times. Some fold under the pressure, while others persevere until it gets better. Dancehall Artist Jahshii has been through the struggle, and he’s holding his head high through it all. He speaks about it in the video for the single, “No Fear“.

Produced by Shynal Music Group, Rapid Production, and Duffle Bag Ent., Jahshii is not letting anything stop him from becoming success in “No Fear”. He knows about the poverty, he has struggled, but he’s not going to let them get the best of him while he works to see a life better than being in the street, and ensuring his family is taken care of it. It’s all about that inner strength, faith, and confidence. He shares a strong message to those who are in the struggle, because better is out there. The accompanying Music Video, which was directed by KhingCam, the Deejay is seen interacting with a few good friends, and recording his anthems for the world to hear. Jahshii has come a long way from the hungry days, and he won’t stop putting in the work till he’s well off.

When it comes to determination, there are many who are strong with it. When it comes to dreams and ambitions, some will do whatever it takes to achieve them. Nothing happens overnight, and your focus needs to be sharp in this journey. Dancehall Artist Kyoka has been working hard on her ambitions for a number of years, and she’s making it happen even when the odds are against her. She shares her determination in “I Can’t Lose“.

Produced by Zimi Records, Kyoka gets some things off her chest in “I Can’t Lose”. She recognizes her gift, and knows her talents will take her far, but the way how people and situations are towards her in her journey, she feels to walk away and focus on other things. If it wasn’t for the love of music and the belief in her talent, her dreams would diminish, and the greatness that we know her for would cease to exist. Kyoka provides relatable situations in her song, and there are many around the world who would give up, but there’s something about that determination that won’t make them quit. OLDIES SUNDAY: Sister Carol – International Style (1983)

The month of March is recognized Internationally as “Women’s History Month“. In the Caribbean, many Women have made great strides, and they have contributed to shaping the future for generations to come. In Jamaica’s music scene, many Women stepped up and made a difference, and set the tone for other Artists to be inspired by. On today’s “Oldies Sunday“, we highlight a Woman who opened the doors for the ladies, and stood out among the crowds. Her name is Sister Carol, and we check out her track, “International Style“.

Produced by Delroy Wright, Hyman “Jah Life” Wright, and Percy Chin and released through  the Jah Life/Live & Learn labels in 1983, Sister Carol had the people listening with “International Style”. This was the early days of Dancehall, and the advent of the Female Deejay was in its growing stages. Carol was one of the Artists who knew that she could hold her own among the Male-dominated scene, and gave listeners a display of a style that was locally known, and Internationally accepted. From Jamaican to American, from Trinidadian to Haitian, from Spanish to Swahili, Carol stepped out from the norm, and not only flexed her diversity, but educated the listener. “International Style” quickly became a hit, and was featured on her 1984 sophomore album, “Black Cinderella“.

Since the release of “International Style”, Sister Carol went on to release more music, and utilized her Degree in Education to teach the people inside, and outside of music. Carol is still active in music, and she sometimes join her daughter, Recording Artist Nakeeba Amaniyea, on a number of singles. In a time when Dancehall was Male-dominated, Sister Carol was one of the many ladies on the scene kicked down the doors to make way for the Female Deejay. “International Style” remains one of her most memorable singles.

How much of a “Portmore Empire” fan are you? How many of you remember the original Portmore Empire though? When it was Vybz Kartel, Deva Bratt, Nuclear, the late Craig Dennis, Earthworm, Doza Medicine, the late Gaza Maxwell, Shawn Storm, Avalanche, Black Ryno, Baby Doll, and the First Lady Omeil. A lot has happened since those days, and members came and went, and have chosen different paths in life. One of the celebrated former members, Doza Medicine, has managed stay above the negativity in the world, and have a life for himself. With the advent of the “Street Vybz 2.0 Riddim“, he steps in with the single, “Mission“.

With the original “Gaza/Portmore Empire Producer” Notnice at the helm, Doza Medicine gives listeners a blast from the past vibes with his “Mission” single. Having recorded the singles “Every Song Dat Play” and “Trinidad & Tobago” on the original “Street Vybz Riddim” in 2010, Doza feels right at home as he shares his ambitions to become a Billionaire, his views on the “Choppas” of Dancehall, staying mysterious to those who believed he was living a destitute life, reminiscing on the good old days, and living life in the best way he can. The single is accompanied by a Music Video that finds him catching flights, signing contracts, and living it up with his people. Despite what some may say, Doza Medicine is doing ok. We can always reflect on the early days of the Portmore Empire, and with discussions of Vybz Kartel’s freedom getting hot, let’s see what the future has in store for us, and the Artists in terms of reunions.
