OLDIES SUNDAY: @ThirdWorldBand – Always Around (1979)

It’s February, and it’s a month where some of us celebrate love. February 6 is a day that celebrates a Music Icon that’s named Marley, the late Bunny Rugs. Bunny Rugs was the Lead Vocalist of the legendary Third World Band. Today, we recognize him with an Oldies Sunday selection. We go back in time to check out, “Always Around“.

Written by the late Irvin “Carrot” Jarrett, “Always Around” was released through Island Records in 1979. The song featured mostly Bunny Rugs vocals throughout as the song spoke of having that special love around, and every good thing can come from that. The song features smooth production that was handled by the Band, and was one of the songs that was a part of the Band’s transition from Roots Reggae, to more Pop-oriented singles. “Always Around” was featured on Third World’s “The Story’s Been Told” album from 1979. The song never charted, but has been considered one of Third World’s best songs.

Happy Birthday to the LEGENDARY Bunny Rugs!

Ricky Rudie - Bling Dawg for 13thStreetPromotions.com #Jamaica #BlingDawg #Music #Dancehall #13thStreetPromotions #Caribbean #Elev8TheAlbum

OLDIES SUNDAY: @Bawse_Dawg – Bling Dawg (2000)

On Oldies Sunday, we highlight some of the greats, and many underdogs in Caribbean music. For today’s selection, we highlight one of the underrated Deejays in Dancehall. He goes by the name Ricky Rudie, a.k.a. Bling Dawg with the track titled, “Bling Dawg”.

Produced by Patrick Roberts on the “Scarface Riddim“, “Bling Dawg” was released through the Shocking Vibes Label in 2000. This track was presented as an introduction to the Artist then known as Ricky Rudie. Bling Dawg would showcase a great flow, witty lyrics which included the line, “If yuh nuh like Bling Dawg, gwaan go suck an egg…“, and a catchy hook. “Bling Dawg” became an instant hit for the Deejay, and found itself on a few music charts in Jamaica, and in parts of the Caribbean and the rest of the world. The music video for the single (directed by “Big Daddy Leo” O’Reggio) quickly brought Bling Dawg to more people as the video would feature a few familiar faces including Bounty Killa, who would make him a member of the Dancehall collective, The Alliance.

Bling Dawg went on to release more music over the years, adopting more to the “Bling Dawg” moniker. He would have a few more hits, popularize a few dances (Zip It Up, Kreech, Aji Bounce), got caught up in a musical beef, transitioned to more conscious music, and became a Fitness Guru in the process. He is currently gearing up for the release of his long awaited album, “Elev8” in February. Boom blast!

If Anuh Me A Who? A Ricky Rudie! A.k.a. BLING DAWG!

OLDIES SUNDAY: Denise Belfon Ft. MAW & Puppah Nas-T – Work (2001)

You know we had to do this. Today’s Oldies Sunday selection will be a little spicy as we take trips to Trinidad and Tobago and New York to check out MAW a.k.a. Masters At Work, Puppah Nas-T, and Denise “Saucy Wow” Belfon’sWork“.

Produced by MAW (a.k.a. Kenny Dope and Little Louie Vega) and Puppah Nas-T and released through MAW Records and Tommy Boy Records, “Work” features Soca Artist Denise Belfon, who is the lead vocalist on the track. Listeners would be invited a showcase of double entendres as Denise is need of someone who would take their “broom” to “sweep her yard” with emphasis on “put yuh back in it“, and “going downtown“. The song features a mix of House Music and Calypso sounds, which provides an enjoyable listen (a guilty pleasure for those who have a thing for double entendres and suggestive lyrics).

“Work” was a successful single for MAW, Puppah Nas-T, and Densie Belfon as the track charted high on the Billboard Dance Club Songs Chart peaking at #7. “Work” was popular in various countries including the US, South Africa, Brazil, and various Caribbean countries including Trinidad and Tobago. “Work” would enjoy a long shelf life thanks to various remixes of the track done by Global Deejays and Danny Marquez, Theo Schwarz, Riffs and Rays, and others. A remix of “Work” done by DJ Flex and Equiknoxx in 2019 became a viral sensation on Social Media thanks to various wining videos made for it on TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram. On January 21, 2022, “Work” would be given more life again thanks to Dancehall Artist Shenseea, US Rapper Megan Thee Stallion, and US Producer Murda Beatz sampling it for the controversial single, “Lick. Where will “Work” find itself next?

THANK YOU MAW, PUPPAH NAS-T, AND DENISE BELFON FOR THIS CLASSIC!

Louchie Lou x Michie One - Rich Girl on 13thStreetPromotions.com #Jamaica #UK #Richgirl #Dancehall #GwenStefani

OLDIES SUNDAY: Louchie Lou X Michie One – Rich Girl (1993)

Make sure you’re working towards your finances when you hear today’s Oldies Sunday selection. Today, we take a trip to the UK to check out Louise Gold and Michelle Charles a.k.a. Ragga/Soul duo Louchie Lou and Michie One’sRich Girl“.

Released through Fashion Records in 1993 (originally 1992 with Sly & Mafia’s “Riot” on the B Side) on the “Fever Pitch Riddim“, “Rich Girl” was Louchie Lou and Michie One’s debut single. The track was inspired by the 1964 track “If I Were A Rich Man” from the “Fiddler On The Roof” Musical. The track found Louchie and Michie sharing lyrics about getting out of Poverty and what they’d do if they were wealthy, but also share that no matter how much money they’d have, they’d never change who they truly are, and money can’t buy love and happiness. “Rich Girl” helped to get Louchie Lou and Michie One’s name out there, but wasn’t an instant hit for them.

Since the release of “Rich Girl”, they duo went on to find chart success, and release albums until they disbanded in 2000. In 2004, American Pop star Gwen Stefani and American Rapper Eve sampled “Rich Girl” for their single, “Rich Girl“, which was produced by Dr. Dre. It went on to become a multiplatinum success.
