OLDIES SUNDAY: Byron Lee & The Dragonaires – Soca Tatie (1995)

On June 28, renowned Tobagonian Recording Artist Oscar B passed away. The legendary Artist has been one of the biggest voices in Soca, and has been a part of many classics, especially with Byron Lee and The Dragonaires as the lead Singer. Today on “Oldies Sunday“, we salute the legend, and his work will live on. For today’s entry, we go back in time to check out, “Soca Tatie“.

Produced by Byron Lee and featuring Dancehall legend Admiral Bailey and released through Dynamic Sounds in 1995, Oscar B along with Byron Lee and The Dragonaires delivered a track that really the people dancing the “Soca Tatie”. The “Tatie” dance was introduced in the Dancehall scene previously, but the Soca touch gave it a bigger presence. The vibes paired with some upbeat production and vocal contributions from Oscar B and Admiral Bailey became a hit instantly, becoming a part of a large catalogue of hits. “Soca Tatie” was featured on the band’s 1995 album of the same name.

Since the release of “Soca Tatie”, Oscar B continued working with Byron Lee and The Dragonaires until Lee’s passing in 2008, and after when the band was renamed “The Dragonaires”. Oscar B passed away in June 2026 from complications following suffering a stroke. His legacy lives on, and many still play “Soca Tatie” in remembrance.
