It’s a new week, and we give thanks! Have you watched anything over the weekend? Care to share with us? This past weekend, the Showtime Network series, “The First Lady” aired their latest episode. The series is a reframing of American leadership, told through the lens of the Women at the heart of the White House. the series stars Viola Davis, Gillian Anderson, Dakota Fanning, and Michelle Pfeiffer. If you’ve been up to date with the series, a familiar Jamaican song may have caught your ears.

On episode 5 of “The First Lady”, Bob Marley & The Wailers’I Shot The Sheriff” made its way in the opening scene. Written by Bob Marley, produced by The Wailers and Chris Blackwell, and released through Island Records/Tuff Gong in 1973, “I Shot The Sheriff” is a chart topping classic. The single was featured on The Wailers’ 1973 album, “Burnin’“. The song has been covered by the likes of Eric Clapton, UB40, Howard Stern and Alpha Blondy, sampled and referenced by the likes of Warren G, Method Man, and Public Enemy, and had a few controversial moments through debates over its lyrics. “The First Lady” is now available for viewing on Showtime.

Freddie McGregor’s “Bobby Babylon” Featured In New @WinningTimeHBO Episode!


Any of you watch the new HBO series “Winning Time“? It chronicles the professional and personal lives of the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers Basketball team, both on and off the court. There are a few familiar faces in the series, and some of your favourite music too, but for their 3rd episode called “The Best Is Yet To Come“, a Reggae classic was featured.

Reggae Artist Freddie McGregor’s 1979 classic, “Bobby Babylon” was featured in the latest episode of “Winning Time”. Produced by Sir Coxsone Dodd for Studio One, “Bobby Babylon” was a hit for Freddie McGregor, and he along with the single lead to the resurgence of the Record Label in the early 1980s. The inclusion of “Bobby Babylon” in the series fits well with the 80s theme as the series focuses on the “Showtime Lakers“. “Winning Time” is now available for viewing every Sunday on HBO.

We’re back again with another discovery in the “Finding Jamaican Music on TV” series. If you’re familiar with the FX series, “Better Things“, in episode 4 called “Ephemera” in the 5th season, a Dancehall/Reggae Icon’s song was featured.

The Iconic Deejay King Yellowman’sPath Of Righteousness” was the featured song in the new “Better Things” episode. The track was released through Goldenlane Records, and featured on the 2013 release of Yellowman’sReggae Essentials/Freedom” compilation album which comprised of re-recorded hits, and demo tracks. Better Things is an American comedy-drama television series that focuses on a divorced actress who raises her three daughters on her own.

Classics From The Paragons & Tommy McCook Featured In New @DeathInParadise Episode!


Jamaican music continues to seep through some of your favourite pieces of content daily, and some of your favourite TV shows are continuing to get a piece of the vibes. Last week we highlighted a Popcaan classic being featured in “Power Book IV: Force, and this week we’re highlighting something from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). Familiar with the series called “Death In Paradise“? Then follow this article for more.

On the 8th episode of the 11th series/season of “Death In Paradise”, classics from Jamaican Icons The Paragons and Tommy McCook were featured. The Paragons were up first with their classic, “Man Next Door” a.k.a. “I’ve Got To Get Away“. The single was released in 1968 through a few labels including Duke Records and Amalgamated Records, and featured vocals from the late John Holt and Bob Andy. Tommy McCook & The Supersonics were next up later in the episode with their 1970 classic, “Reggae Merengue“. This Instrumental was released through Treasure Isle Records, and was sampled by UK Artist Lily Allen.

“Death In Paradise” is a British–French crime drama television series that is set on the fictional Island of Saint Marie. Jamaican Actress Shantol Jackson is featured in Series/Season 11 as Sergeant Naomi Thomas.

Sister Nancy’s “Bam Bam” Featured In New @Netflix Series, “Maid.”


It’s always good to hear some of our favourite songs in TV and Film, especially when you’d least expect to hear Dancehall, Reggae, or even Soca music in them. Known as one of the most sampled Dancehall track, Sister Nancy’sBam Bam” is still doing its rounds. This time around, it has made an appearance in Netflix’s newest series, “Maid“.

Featured in episode 3 of “Maid”, “Bam Bam” was produced by Winston Riley and released in 1982. It created history as it put Sister Nancy on the map for being the 1st Female Dancehall Artist, and the first to tour internationally as one. That sweet Reggae music continues to seep through some of your favourite shows, and it won’t stop anytime soon. Recently, the 3rd season of the FOX TV show “9-1-1” premiered, and fans of the show were overjoyed. With stars like Angela Bassett and Jennifer Love Hewitt, the series follows the lives of Los Angeles first responders: Police Officers, Paramedics, Firefighters, and Dispatchers. On the premiere episode, viewers got a double dose of Reggae as Jamaican Band Toots & The Maytals and UK Band The English Beat’s music were featured.

Toots and The Maytals were the first to bat as their classic track, “54-46 Was My Number” was featured in a scene, then The English Beat’s “Doors Of Your Heart” followed soon after in another. “54-46” was released in 1968 and 1969, and produced by Leslie Kong. It has been sampled by Rapper Foxy Brown, Major Lazer, and Christiana Aguilera. “Doors Of Your Heart” was released in 1981, and was featured on the Band’s Sophomore album, “Wha’ppen?“.
