OLDIES SUNDAY: Roy Rayon – Love Fever (1985)

Last night (July 26), the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) hosted the finals of their yearly “Jamaica Festival Song Competition“. Since 1966, the competition showcased a variety of talent from the Island, with one becoming the ultimate winner for the year, winning cash prizes and local recognition. Today on “Oldies Sunday” we thought, why not highlight one of the competition’s biggest winners. We go back in time to check out “Mr. Festival” a.k.a. Roy Rayon, and his track, “Love Fever“.

Produced by Fab 5, written by Grub Cooper, and released through Stage Records in 1985, Roy Rayon stepped out as a winner with his track, “Love Fever”. The song is about a feeling that one can’t just shake out of, and is very addictive. Rayon’s entry was made to connect with the people, and bring on some nice vibes. “Love Fever” was an entry in the 1985 staging of the JCDC Festival Song Competition, and it was emerged the victor that year. The song’s popularity spread to Rayon’s 1985 debut album, “Trash ‘N’ Ready“, which was also a successful release.

Since the release of “Love Fever”, Roy Rayon went on to become a household name. He would go on to win 3 more years at the JCDC Festival Song Competition, earning the nickname, “Mr. Festival”. Rayon would also gained consistent bookings yearly during Independence Day festivities, and various national events. He would also hold the position as celebrity judge on Digicel’sRising Stars” competition series for a number of years. Super Beagle & Reggie Stepper Sampled On New @FreddieGibbs & @Alchemist Project

In the wee hours of Friday July 25, US Rapper Freddie Gibbs and Producer The Alchemist released their new collaborative project called, “Alfredo 2“. The new project is the sequel to their 2020 release, and features the duo sharing street tales, and a display of lyrical exercises over solid production. Fans have anticipated this project for quite some time, but some may have heard a familiar sound on one of the tracks.

On track 5 of Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist’s “Alfredo 2” named “Empanadas“, Reggie Stepper and Super Beagle’sCu Oonuh” was sampled throughout. Produced by Winston Riley on the “Stalag Riddim” and released through the Techniques label in 1993, “Cu Oonuh” was one of Stepper’s biggest singles. The intro for the track, which was performed by Super Beagle, was sampled for “Empanadas”. “Cu Oonuh” was previously sampled on Rapper Logic’sBobby Tarantino 2” project, its most popular sampling was done on Kanye West’s 2012 track, “Mercy“. Freddie Gibbs is no stranger to using Dancehall/Reggae in his music, and has previously worked with Agent Sasco for his “Bandana” project, and sampled Dancehall music for previous projects. We hope the respective people sampled and their estates are taken care of fairly. “Alfredo 2” is out now.

OLDIES SUNDAY: A.R.P. – Selena (1998)

It’s “Oldies Sunday“, and today’s selection is for the smokers. We go back to the 90s to check out Jamaican group A.R.P., and the single, “Selena“.

Produced by Paul Henton on the “M-16 Riddim” and released in 1998, A.R.P. is all about smoking on the best of herbs, and the ladies who love them in, “Selena”. The group, comprised of Orville “Da’Ville” Thomas, Roger “Mitch” Mitchell, Collin “Leon” Gilbert, Patrick “Patchino” Hylton, and Ormando “Orand” Rose-Green, delivered smooth vocals with a flow that plays well with a smoke session, and for those times when you’re getting cozy with the special person. “Selena” became a hit for the group, and helped to place them in the mainstream.

Since the release of “Selena”, A.R.P. went on to become a prominent group in Dancehall/Reggae. They scored big with collaborations with Beenie Man, dealt with a short-lived beef with T.O.K., and released more music until parting ways in the early 2000s. Da’Ville and Mitch went solo, but Da’ville rose to becoming one of Jamaica’s in-demand vocalists for a number of years. They continued to work together through collaborations on Da’Ville’s solo projects, but never reformed. “Selena” continues to be remembered by fans and music lovers.
