13thStreetPromo: Hey Lila! Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to rock with us. Many have heard you on tracks like Protoje’s “Flight Plans“, and on your debut single, “Biggest Fan“, but who is the Artist named Lila Ike?

Lila Ike: Thanks for having me. To keep it simple and sweet, Lila Iké is a chill person who just enjoys creating and vibing.

13thSP: When did you discover that you could sing, and when did you decide that you want to pursue a music career?

LI: I discovered I could really sing during my years in Primary School (Elementary School). Realizing how good I was, I decided I wanted to pursue it as a career during my time in University.

@Protoje’s “Answer To Your Name” Featured In New @LethalWeaponFox Episode!

It’s been over two years since the release of Recording Artist Protoje’s “Ancient Future“, and it’s still a banger! What’s your favourite song off of it? Still wish it won a Grammy. If you’re a viewer of the hit FOX TV series Lethal Weapon, then you might’ve heard a familiar song from the Artist in their latest episode. Kicking off the first 30 seconds was the first single off the 2015 Album, “Answer To Your Name“! Produced by Winta James and Lewis Planter, Protoje went into storytelling mode on this one and had influences of Ska throughout the Production.

Lethal Weapon is a TV series based on the popular “Buddy Cop” Comedy Movie franchise which stars Comedian Damon Wayans and Clayne Crawford. The Movie starred Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. Sidenote: Congrats to the new Dad Protoje, we hope the Lion Cub is ready for a fun life filled with good music and sights to see. Check out the clip below.

@Protoje & @Mortimer876 Aim To Open Your Eyes With “Truths And Rights”!

With fists raised, Protoje and Mortimer deliver an audio revolution with “Truths And Rights“! Produced by Winta James, the duo kick down the doors of injustice, inequality, oppression, and poverty, and encourage listeners to get in formation to set the oppressed free, and get people that mean the world well in power! With so much going on in the world, we all want better for ourselves, our Children, and their Children…but the good fight has to happen in order to see positive changes. Featured on the cover of the single is one of the photos taken during the Grenadian Revolution in March of 1979 which overthrew the government of Eric Gairy, the 1st Prime Minister of the Island by Maurice Bishop (Politician and leader of the New Jewel Movement (NJM)). Forward Ever, Backward Never! Another anthem from Diggy British and the young Mortimer! Be militant and check out the track below.

@Protoje Stirs The Pot Again With The Official Video For “Blood Money”!

After waking up Jamaica with his crimson tinged single earlier this year, the official visual for Protoje’sBLXXD MONEY” is finally here! Directed by Che Kothari with Production by Claire Osman, viewers get a glimpse of the many forms of corruption, a broader look than the lyrics which spoke about corruption in high places, and the various turns made throughout its running time. The video targets every class, and those who practice the dirty ways will eventually see a fall. A statement making song that turned into a powerful video, more like “What A BLXXDCLXXT Film“! Since its inception in late 2016, it has quickly become the talk of the town, or rather the Island. For those who don’t know, we recently interviewed a couple members behind the “New Wave” team, Lindsey Lodenquai (Head Coordinator), and Davida-Mae Chambers (Social Media Manager/Coordinator). 13thStreetPromo: For those who don’t know, what is the origin of New Wave? How did it come about from an idea to an event?
New Wave: New Wave began with Protoje and Jason Panton who envisioned a platform for emerging local talents- once the idea is there, there will always be a way for it to manifest to fruition.
13SP: Describe a standard night at a New Wave event.
NW: VIBESY! It’s always a great feeling being there with persons who are equally enthused about culture and creativity!

13SP: “Jamaica has so much to offer culturally and artistically from this generation”. What’s New Wave’s stance on this comment, and how important is it for events like this to push Jamaica’s talent?
NW: The comment is so true, the talent this generation has is through the roof! Once we have the resources, It is our responsibility to nurture this talent and allow it to flourish.
