OLDIES SUNDAY: Lord Hummingbird – Teenage Bossa Nova Girl (1963)

Music has always been the topic of discussion, and with it has brought on numerous trends and movements. Many individuals have stepped up to make their contributions, becoming a part of History in the process. For today’s Oldies Sunday selection, we go back a few decades, and to the twin Island of Trinidad and Tobago to check out Albert Ribeiro a.k.a. Lord Hummingbird and his Orchestra for the track, “Teenage Bossa Nova Girl“.

“Teenage Bossa Nova Girl” was released through Hummingbird Records in 1963, Lord Hummingbird shared his observations sparked by the rapid growth of the “Bossa Nova” musical movement, especially with the youth. It was encouraged to dance to the “Bossa Nova” sound, and the new sound was like nothing being played out there. Originated in Brazil in the 1950s, “Bossa Nova” is described as a relaxed style of Samba Music that blended harmonies, Classicial Guitar, Drums and Percussion, making it an extension of the Samba sound. Thanks to a few Musicians and the Film “Black Orpheus“, “Bossa Nova” created waves in South America, eventually taking over more territories, influencing generations of Musicians. Hummingbird, a Calypsonian Artist, tapped into the “Bossa Nova” sound, and made it a part of his overall sound, making him a dominant force.

“Teenage Bossa Nova Girl” quickly became a hit for Hummingbird, and helped to bring his name to more parts of the world. For those still here, Albert Ribeiro is the Grandfather of Alfonso Ribeiro, Actor and Dancer most famously known for his role as Carlton Banks in “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air“. He is currently the main Host of “Dancing With The Stars“.

Not much is known about Lord Hummingbird, but since the release of “Teenage Bossa Nova Girl”, Lord Hummingbird went on to release more music. “Teenage Bossa Nova Girl” remains his most well-known release.

Thank You Lord Hummingbird For This Classic!

Blak Ryno Gives Us Real #RockNRyno With New Single, “Star Up In The Sky”

Over a week ago, Jamaican Social Media was on fire. Dancehall Artist Blak Ryno shared a song that for the currently-trending “Dutty Money Riddim“, with the intention of getting it authourized by Producer Rvssian. Ryno, who already had a classic on the original “Go-Go Club Riddim“, argued online that he should secure another hit on the revamped version of the beat. Things started to go left, and after a few series of jokes about his hair (he was flat ironing it during his argument), something beautiful happened. After a few jokes comparing Ryno to a Rockstar emerged, DJs and fans started seeing Ryno in another light. Out of the madness emerged, #RockNRyno, a series of remixes that placed the Deejay’s vocals over popular Rock, Soft Rock, and Alternative Instrumentals. What started as a joke turned into a boost into Ryno’s music career, and the anticipation of an actual Rock song from the Deejay. After all that talking, the track is finally here, and it’s called, “Star Up In The Sky“.

Produced by Silverbird Records/Twelve 9 Records/Get Em Franco, Blak Ryno shared his Rock side on “Star Up In The Sky”. With ZJ Sparks, BloodlineFranco, and Chambah at the helm, we get Ryno reflecting on his struggles over the years, sharing his ambitions and current challenges, and encouraging listeners to win and go for what’s theirs in order to overcome poverty. Like a star in the sky, he will shine throughout his mission. The first Rock offering from Ryno promises to open up opportunities for more releases, and he is currently finalizing his EP for a release later this year. Tackle poverty the #RockNRyno way.

Aidonia "Bottles" on 13thStreetPromotions.com #Jamaica #Dancehall #Music #13thStreetPromotions #Aidonia #NotniceRecords #Notnice #Bottles #StreetVybzRiddim #Caribbean

.@Aidonia4thGenna & @NotniceRecords Join Forces, Pop “Bottles” Together

Dancehall Music has always had its share of feuds and drama since its inception. What can happen out of the conflict are either great songs, flopped careers, a boost in profile, or a resolution where both parties make amends for the better. The mid to late 2000s saw the rise of the Portmore Empire/Gaza, Gullyside, The Alliance, and J.O.P. (now 4th Genna) camps, all headed by Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Bounty Killa, and Aidonia respectively. There was turmoil, with each camp having some form of beef. In one episode, Aidonia and Vybz Kartel started beefing, pitting their camps against each other. Today that beef is long gone, and we see Aidonia joining forces with Notnice, once a top Producer for Portmore Empire, to release the single, “Bottles“.

“Bottles” is a celebration of life and good times, with Aidonia for the first time recording over production by Notnice. Over a revamped version of the classic “Street Vybz Riddim” that was released in 2010, we’re popping bottles, living it up with friends, and building a vibe like no other “when bad song a drop“. The “Street Vybz Riddim” got new life at the end of 2023 with Chronic Law’sWeekend, and now Aidonia captains the Ship to make it one of the hottest Riddims for 2024. Fans will be taken back to the days of a very dominant Aidonia and his J.O.P. cohorts, and the times when Notnice was everywhere. We look forward to hearing more from this pairing, and who have been recruited to voice on the Riddim (Alkaline has been rumoured to be next up). Sometimes beef can end on a good note. J.O.P.!

Jamaican Music continues to make a bigger presence in more of the things we enjoy, and we love it. Recently, Video Streaming giant Netflix released the Sci-Fi drama, “The Kitchen“. Both the dub and single versions of “Walk Away” are featured on McLean’s 2004 album, “On Bond Street KGN. JA.“.
