Today (January 17), we celebrate the birthday of a giant, a column, and a King of Dancehall, Shabba Ranks. The Man born Rexton Gordon made significant contributions to the genre, with a few extras. Shabba was not only a huge earner for Dancehall Music in the 90s and successfully crossed over to the International market, but was the first Deejay to score GRAMMY awards. He paved the way for a number of Artists, scored a national honour for his work, and is still celebrated today. Today, we recognize his 59th birthday, and celebrate his catalogue with our latest Playlist.

In our “Sampling Shabba Ranks” Playlist, we shed a light on the number of times Dancehall legend Shabba Ranks has been sampled. There was been a number of times from Hip Hop, to Pop, to Electronic Music where the Deejay has been sampled, and we’re taking the time to not only highlight, but educate on how far this Dancehall music has gotten in the world. Featuring Japanese Recording Artist MC Mystie, Buddha Boy a.k.a Bodhi invites you to a session for meditation and mellow vibes in “Heartbeat”. The song promotes unity in a time when there is a lot of division, and we should truly be in tune with that one frequency. From Tokyo to Kingston, we are one when we’re connected. Buddha Boy and Mystie deliver their words like chants throughout over a production that borrows from Electronic Music, and Hip Hop. “Heartbeat” and its production are a great addition to meditation sessions, and showcases one of the many sides to Buddha Boy’s creativity. “Heartbeat” is a track off of Buddha Boy’s “Children Of The Sun” album, that features a number of worldwide collaborations, and tracks that share various messages. The world is in need of love, real love. Haiti needs a lot of love, and a lot more from some good hearts. The Island hasn’t always been in the media for good news, and that needs to change, and uplift the nation. Haitian Electronic Music/Rara Tech DJ Gardy Girault is on a mission to get the world to love again, and he shares a message with the track, “Gaye Lòv La (Spread Love)“.

 The self-produced “Gaye Lòv La” was released through Rizing Muzik and features Haitian Recording Artist J. Perry. On the track, we get the message From Gardy Girault and Perry on the importance of spreading love, and the world is in need of it. People have been experiencing hatred, going through traumatic events, losing hope, and losing love, and the track looks to inspire people to put their best foot forward, and help to bring back the love. According to Girault and Perry, they are starting a love revolution. The mission doesn’t stop there as with the Oasis Imagery & Film-directed video, the Artists spread the love in the schools, in the streets, and at events. They also do their part in providing smiles along the way through various gestures, and the visual is filled with an abundance of positivity. “Gaye Lòv La” came right on time for “Haitian Flag Day” festivities, but it’s an important release to play all year round. In 1970, the duo known as Dave Barker and Ansell Collins a.k.a. Dave & Ansell Collins released their single, “Double Barrel“. Produced by Winston Riley, the song went on to become the second Jamaican produced track to top the UK music charts. From there it went on to sell numerous records, charted in the US, and introduced the world to a young Sly Dunbar, who played drums on the record. It became a classic, and was immortalized by many Artists through the technique of sampling. Today, for our latest #13thStreetThrowback Playlist, we highlight “Double Barrel”.

Featuring 50 tracks, the “Double Barrel” Playlist highlights a few covers, and songs that sampled the 1970 hit. From Special Ed’s infamous “I’m The Magnificent“, to Kanye West’s “The One“, and from Hip Hop to Electronic Music, “Double Barrel” has traveled near and far.
