We Look Back At King Jammys’ “Sleng Teng Riddim” In Our Throwback Playlist Series



In 1985, a Jamaican Producer by the name of Lloyd James o/c King Jammys would change the landscape in Jamaican music forever. Armed with a Casio MT-40 and the MT-40 Rock Rhythm, he would create the “Sleng Teng Riddim“. Widely regarded as the first “Digital Riddim“, the Riddim would make its debut with Dancehall Artist Wayne Smith’sUnder Mi Sleng Teng“. Over 40 years later, the Riddim would gain attention with the release of Sean Paul’sStand On Business“, celebrating the Riddim’s historic achievement, and further solidifying King Jammys’ contributions to the culture. Did you know it was even sampled in a video game? Today, we show love to the Riddim in our “#13thStreetThrowbackPlaylist series.

Featuring over 60 tracks, we take you time traveling to the various eras where the “Sleng Teng Riddim” dominated. We have the original version, the John John version, the “Godfather Riddim“, the samples, and more. From Wayne Smith’s classic, to many others by the likes of Tenor Saw, Super Cat, Johnny Osbourne, Sugar Minott, and more. There are many Riddims, and the “Sleng Teng Riddim” remains an uncontested classic.

We Highlight The Dave & Ansell Collins Classic, “Double Barrel” In Our Throwback Playlist!


In 1970, the duo known as Dave Barker and Ansell Collins a.k.a. Dave & Ansell Collins released their single, “Double Barrel“. Produced by Winston Riley, the song went on to become the second Jamaican produced track to top the UK music charts. From there it went on to sell numerous records, charted in the US, and introduced the world to a young Sly Dunbar, who played drums on the record. It became a classic, and was immortalized by many Artists through the technique of sampling. Today, for our latest #13thStreetThrowback Playlist, we highlight “Double Barrel”.

Featuring 50 tracks, the “Double Barrel” Playlist highlights a few covers, and songs that sampled the 1970 hit. From Special Ed’s infamous “I’m The Magnificent“, to Kanye West’sThe One“, and from Hip Hop to Electronic Music, “Double Barrel” has traveled near and far. We Look Back At The Many Versions Of The “Mad Mad Riddim” In Our Throwback Playlist!


Happy Friday the 13th everyone! A lot of things are going on in the world, but music is one that stays constant. Today in our #13thStreetThrowback Playlist series, we look back at a Riddim that has many names and variations, the classic “Mad Mad Riddim“!

We first go back to the year 1967 with the release of Alton Ellis’Mad Mad Mad” which was produced by the late Sir “Coxsone” Dodd for Coxsone Records, and that one song’s production lead to plenty versions over the years. From the “Junjo” Lawes produced “Mad Mad Riddim” that gave us the classic “Diseases” by Michigan & Smiley and “Zungguzungguguzungguzeng” by Yellowman in the 1980s, to the infamous “Golden Hen Riddim” that gave us classics from Josey Wales, to Bobby Konders and Massive B’sPlatinum Hen Riddim” in 2011, to tracks that have sampled a version of the Riddim, this Playlist has it covered from familiar songs to rare cuts.

We Look Back At Some “Bobby Digital” Dixon Productions In Our Throwback Playlist!


It’s been a while, but we’re back with a new Playlist. More importantly, a #13thStreetThrowback Playlist! On May 21, Jamaica lost one of its greatest Producers, Robert Dixon a.k.a. “Bobby Digital”. A man who conquered a unique style of production and is a founding father of the global Dancehall movement, Bobby Digital and his Digital B label blessed the likes of Shabba Ranks, Morgan Heritage, Buju Banton, Admiral Tibet, Sizzla, Bounty Killa, Beenie Man, Garnett Silk, and many others with the sounds that scored chart topping success, Grammy wins, and various certifications. Today, we pay homage to this great man with a new Throwback Playlist. From the 80s to the 90s and beyond, we give you some of the classics, and a few songs that sampled those classics. We Look Back At @LenkyMarsden’s “Diwali Riddim” In Our Throwback Playlist Series!


Happy Friday everyone! While many of us are in the middle of Black Friday shopping all over the world, and our American friends are still sleepy after their Thanksgiving feasts, we thought we’d put a lil pep in your step. Bringing back our #13thStreetThrowback Playlist series, we go back to the year 2002 to check out the “Diwali Riddim“!

Produced by StevenLenkyMarsden and released through the 40/40 Label, the Riddim gave us plenty memorable tracks from the likes of General Degree, Wayne WonderBuju Banton, Danny English, and timeless hits like a track called “Get Busy” by Sean Paul (which was featured on a multiplatinum album), and a duo named Brick & Lace with the hit, “Love Is Wicked“. The Riddim has also been sampled by Tiwa Savage, Thutmose, Lumidee, and a certain Superstar by the name of Rihanna.

We Look Back At @TonyCDKelly’s “Bookshelf Riddim” In Our Throwback Playlist Series!


Recently, Dancehall Artist Konshens dropped a new single titled, “Bad Man“. Off his latest “BadMan vs Nice Guy” project, he recruited the classic “Bookshelf Riddim” for the track and gave listeners a dose of the Konz’ sound. Released in 1998, this was produced by legendary Producer Tony “CD” Kelly and released through his K-Licious label. The Riddim featured the hits, “Bookshelf” by Beenie Man, “Deport Them” by Sean Paul, and was sampled by the likes of Ape Drums, Khalia, and Sneakbo.
