OLDIES SUNDAY: Roy Rayon – Love Fever (1985)

Last night (July 26), the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) hosted the finals of their yearly “Jamaica Festival Song Competition“. Since 1966, the competition showcased a variety of talent from the Island, with one becoming the ultimate winner for the year, winning cash prizes and local recognition. Today on “Oldies Sunday” we thought, why not highlight one of the competition’s biggest winners. We go back in time to check out “Mr. Festival” a.k.a. Roy Rayon, and his track, “Love Fever“.

Produced by Fab 5, written by Grub Cooper, and released through Stage Records in 1985, Roy Rayon stepped out as a winner with his track, “Love Fever”. The song is about a feeling that one can’t just shake out of, and is very addictive. Rayon’s entry was made to connect with the people, and bring on some nice vibes. “Love Fever” was an entry in the 1985 staging of the JCDC Festival Song Competition, and it was emerged the victor that year. The song’s popularity spread to Rayon’s 1985 debut album, “Trash ‘N’ Ready“, which was also a successful release.

Since the release of “Love Fever”, Roy Rayon went on to become a household name. He would go on to win 3 more years at the JCDC Festival Song Competition, earning the nickname, “Mr. Festival”. Rayon would also gained consistent bookings yearly during Independence Day festivities, and various national events. He would also hold the position as celebrity judge on Digicel’s “Rising Stars” competition series for a number of years. He is recognized yearly for his contributions to the JCDC, and “Love Fever” is considered one of his favourite releases.

Recording Artist Jah Lil has been doing a lot to build on his career. From live shows to music releases, his following has grown through it all, and has been given more opportunities to take his music to new places. While he readies up a full length project for release later this year, he steps out with a new video for the single, “One Gift (Remix)“.

Directed by Fernando F. Hivea for Filmaica and featuring Recording Artist Jahmiel, Jah Lil takes on the road through cycling in the video for the Give Thanks Music/Out Deh Records-produced “One Gift (Remix)”. The two Artists deliver strong lyrics with their signature sounds, and make a collaboration that is sure to connect with the people. The single was released last month, and it was only right that there was a video made for it. They work well together, and we look forward to more collaborations with them. For all the years Dancehall/Reggae Artist Jahmiel has been active, he has displayed an array of talent that makes his an Artist to emulate. Even when you don’t hear from him often, he’s still ensuring that his presence is known when he drops something. He’s not a local act, and his name continues to connect with more around the world. He continues to share his gift with the new EP, “Sound Of Greatness“.

Featuring 6 tracks, Jahmiel shows why he has a strong career with the release of the “Sound Of Greatness” EP. He shares music to motivate the people, and even has something for the ladies. The EP was done in collaboration with Producer Minto Play Da Riddim, and features an appearance by Projexx. Jahmiel is working on a follow up to his well-received 2024 album “Nirvana“, so be sure to fully enjoy this EP until an album announcement.

The former lead Singer of the 90s group A.R.P did very well for himself as a solo Artist, creating classics, and standing out with a vocal presence that has people wanting more. He took time away from the scene to focus on other things and taking the music on the road, but the requests for his return kept piling up. He released songs under the radar over time, but people needed him to return with a bang. He did just that today with the release of, “Sunshine Days“.

Produced by Global Merchant Music, Da’Ville makes his official return to music in 13 years with the release of, “Sunshine Days”. This new single is for those who are dealing with dark clouds and cold days, and when the right person or situation comes your way, everything is back in a vibrant colour, and moods are lifted. Da’Ville still has the vocal chops, and this is the start of him coming back with more consistent music. His words are further emphasized with a music video directed by Bling Blang, and we can see how everything is better when some positivity comes and brightens up the scene. Produced by Fred Irie and featuring Gio Mar, Justice The Artiste is all about making great things happen with the special lady in, “Precision”. Over the weekend, US Rapper Travis Scott released the new album, “Jackboys 2“. Done in collaboration with his “Cactus Jack” collective, the new album has been receiving a lot of attention on Social Media. One song in particular on the album, “Shyne“, has been met with a variety of comments.

“Shyne” features Memphis Rapper Glorilla, and is one of the closing tracks on the new “Jackboys 2” album. Since its release, it has drawn quite the attention online. The track sampled the 2000 single, “Bad Boyz” from US/Belize Rapper Shyne. Produced by Ez Elpee and sampled Grace Jones’ “Nightclubbin“, “Bad Boyz” features Reggae/Dancehall legend Barrington Levy (whose “Broader Than Broadway” was also sampled on the track), and showcases a great example of culture blending, and Caribbean vibes in one of the biggest melting pots of the world. Travis Scott’s track finds him not only sampling the production, but attempting to copy Barrington Levy’s signature “Shibbily dabbily” style that was performed on the original. Scott joins a number of Artists who sampled “Bad Boyz”, and they include Lady London, Sean Price, and Cassidy. We hope the business was handled right in regards of sampling this classic. “Jackboys 2” also features a collaboration with Vybz Kartel called “PBT“, and the album is out now on all streaming platforms.
