Jelissa Williamson Celebrates Jamaican Heritage With Kid-Friendly Craft

To all my viewers and readers living overseas, how much do you miss being at home? We understand many migrated for financial reasons, and some desire to return living better than they lived growing up in the Caribbean. Some keep the feeling alive by visiting when they can, some attend Caribbean-themed events, some secure the family connection, while others find creative ways to make “farrin” feel like home. London-based Creative and Mother of two Jelissa Williamson a.k.a. Jelissa Marie may not have been born in Jamaica, but she makes connections to keep herself and her family close to her heritage. Recently, she used her love of being creative to celebrate her heritage that everyone can enjoy.

With “Felt Like Yard“, Jelissa Marie creates fun items that tap into her love for Jamaica. In a series of videos she shared on Social Media, she displayed Jamaican cuisine and fruits that had many doing double takes to see if the food was real. From Ackee & Saltfish, to Oxtail with Plantain and Rice and Peas, to Patty, to Guineps, to Porridge with Crackers, to Jerk Chicken, Jelissa’s hands were given a special touch to make these well-loved items from home come to life. With children in mind including her two daughters, Jelissa’s creations encourage stronger family bonds, and with the use of the Montessori Education system, boost children’s zeal for learning and creativity, and develop a love and respect for heritage. The Montessori system is an educational system designed to tap into children’s natural interests and activities rather than a formal way of learning. This includes hands-on learning, playing, developing real-world skills, emphasizing a child’s independence and eagerness to learn.

Jelissa is currently dealing with a demand for her Island creations to be made for purchase, but she is finalizing her catalogue of items, and has a waiting list available for those interested. She’s also open for collaborations. You can find Jelissa on Instagram and TikTok.

.@JalenNgonda Brings Classic Reggae Vibes With “All About Me”

It’s a new week, and with it comes new music. We know the influence of Jamaica around the world. No matter how they try to downplay it, wi large! Today’s post highlights a Singer who was influenced by Jamaica’s music culture for his latest single. Check out Maryland-born/Liverpool-based Recording Artist Jalen Ngonda’sAll About Me“.

Produced by Victor Axelrod and released through Daptone Records, Jalen Ngonda taps into some old school Reggae vibes for the new single, “All About Me”. Jalen plays the role of an arrogant lover here as he tells his love interest that his love is a rare one, and she’ll never find another like his. On the other hand, she means something important to him, and he believes the relationship will endure. The song might have been inspired by the 1978 single “Go Away Dream” by Derrick Harriott (which was a cover of the 1973 single by The Chi-Lites), but overall, one would truly believe this was recorded by one of our soulful acts from back in the day. There is even a Dub version of the track that you can check out below. Jalen Ngonda has found himself a viral hit, and we look forward to what he’ll step out with next.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Chicken Hawk – Education (1989)

It’s back to school time, and from grade 1 to College level, we wish you all the best on the new term, and new year. Today on “Oldies Sunday“, we want to drive the message of getting your education even further with our throwback selection. We go back in time to check out Chicken Hawk’sEducation“.

Produced by Steely & Clevie on the “Fast Car Riddim” and released through Steely & Clevie Records in 1989, Chicken Hawk gave listeners a lesson with his “Education” single. It was really a lesson as he had a word for every letter, putting together a song that rode the riddim well, and displayed how lyrical a Deejay can be. When it comes to education, many Deejays encouraged us to read, write, and learn the golden rule, making us scholars in the classroom, and in Dancehall School. “Education” was a hit for Chicken Hawk, with many children knowing it word for word back in the day. The track was featured on Steely & Clevie’s “Fast Car Riddim” compilation, which was released in 1989.

Since the release of “Education”, Chicken Hawk went on to release more music over the years. In recent years, he has made appearances on Social Media where he would perform some of his song on livestreams and staged events. Many still remember his “Education” single, and reminisce on their school days.

Thank You Chicken Hawk For This Hit!
