The Month of May is recognized as “Child’s Month“, and on “Oldies Sunday“, we feature content that highlights former Child Stars in Caribbean music, or music that supported the children. For today’s selection, we look back at Thriller Prince’s “Teach The Children“.

Produced by Richard Bell on the “Baltimore Riddim“, “Teach The Children” was released through the Star Trail label in 1996. The song finds Thriller Prince spreading the message of good parenting, emphasizing raising children in the right way, guiding them to live fulfilling lives, and trodding on the right paths. Thriller melodically delivers over the solid production, and the messages shared are still relevant today. The song gained attention locally and parts of the world, and is a solid one on the “Baltimore Riddim”.

Since the release of “Teach The Children”, Thriller Prince continued to be an active Artist. Under a new alias Izeezi, he continued to release more music, and was recently a part of some performance events in parts of Jamaica. “Teach The Children” is still recognized by some.

Produced by Cherry Beatz, Sarina is looking for “the one” in “What U Didn’t Know“. Over thumping production, Sarina gets melodic as she shares the requirements when it comes to finding a partner. Enter Recording Artist NellaLeah, a Jamaican-born Singer based in the Cayman Islands who has been on the scene for quite some time. She has been bitten by the Carnival bug many times, and she wants to spread the joy, energy, and spirit of Carnival through her new single, “Tun It Up“.

Produced by Jason “JG” Gilbert, NellaLeah brings the energy on “Tun It Up”. When the scene is filled with Soca fans, beautiful people, unity, and great sounds, you just want to experience it all. Today’s Monday for many, but it’s also known as the first day of a stressful week. There aren’t many fans of Monday in the working world, and the day has gotten such a bad reputation, that there were petitions to not make it a work day. Antiguan Soca Diva Claudette Peters shares the same sentiment, but she needs herself some time off so she can get back to being the Diva she is. In her words, she needs a “Mental Day“.

Produced by ChippyG and Brukway Production, Claudette Peters is stressed out, and she shares what she’d really like to do on “Mental Day”. With the Antigua Carnival season gearing up for a hot Summer, Peters wants to dance, get on bad, and enjoy life the way she should. Work causes many to be fed up, so having time off helps to give the person a chance to recharge, and with the way how our Mental Health has been over the past few years, we all need a break. If you can’t get that time off yet, put yourself in a place mentally where you can party with the people, enjoy the sounds of Carnival, and harness that good energy till it happens in real life. OLDIES SUNDAY: Tony Tuff – I’ll Have To Get You (1980/1990)

Recently, the Jamaican music scene, and the music world lost another star. The late Singer Tony Tuff transitioned on April 20, and many fans are still mourning the loss. His career started as a member of The African Brothers in the 1960s before going solo in the 1970s, with a number of hits to his name. Today on Oldies Sunday, we pay tribute to him by highlighting his hit single, “I’ll Have To Get You“.

Produced by Alvin Ranglin and released through GG’s Records in 1980, Tony Tuff had his sights set on a beautiful Woman in “I’ll Have To Get You”. He takes the listener through this story from the day he first laid eyes on her, to finding every way to not only have her full attention, but actually making her his. He shows a keen determination in getting her, and he lists all the qualities that make him attracted to her. The low tempo production on “I’ll Have To Get You” encourages many couples to boogie down in the later part of the dance, and the single quickly became a hit.

The popularity of “I’ll Have To Get You” enabled it to get a second life in 1990 when it was re-recorded and released as “I’ve Got To Get You“. Produced by Donovan Germain and Dave Kelly on the “A Love I Can Feel Riddim” and released through Penthouse Records, Tony Tuff’s hit earned him a new audience, and it secured its own place a 90s hit as the “A Love I Can Feel Riddim” gained popularity. It was allowed Tony to record various Dubplates for the song in the following years

Since the release of “I’ll Have To Get You”, Tony Tuff enjoyed a solo career that found him releasing more music and albums, touring parts of the world until his passing at age 69. The old and new versions of “I’ll Have To Get You” remain some of his most recognized singles.
