“The Equalizer” is an action TV series that focuses on Robyn McCall, who lives life as a single Mother, but has a mysterious side where she uses her extensive range of skills to help people out of various situations. The series stars Queen Latifah and Lorraine Toussaint, and is aired weekly on CBS. It’s inspired by the movie trilogy of the same name that stars Denzel Washington, and is a reboot of the 1980s TV series. This series is in its 3rd season, and during their latest episode, a familiar Reggae classic was featured.

In the season 3 finale of “The Equalizer” titled “Patriot Game“, Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers To Cross” closed off the episode. Co-Produced with Leslie Kong, the song was released in 1969 through Trojan Records. The ballad was written at a time Cliff was having difficulty in becoming a successful Musician in the UK, and it brought a lot of frustration within himself. The ballad was featured on his sophomore album “Jimmy Cliff” a.k.a. “Wonderful World, Beautiful People” and “The Harder They Come” soundtrack, and is one of Cliff’s biggest hits. “Many Rivers To Cross” was previously featured in the movie “Rush“, along with the TV shows “Daredevil“, “Wilfred“, and “Falling Skies“. The ballad was also covered by UB40, and Tessanne Chin during her time on “The Voice” in 2013.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Louisa Mark – Caught You In A Lie (1975)

In recognition of Women’s History Month, we take the time out to feature Women who have made great contributions to our music culture. While we celebrate the Women all year over here, we recognize some through our Oldies Sunday section. For today’s selection, we stop in London to check out the late Louisa “Markswoman” Mark and her track, “Caught You In A Lie“.

Produced by “Sir Coxsone” Dodd, “Caught You In A Lie” was released through Safari Records, and the Gussie label in 1975. The track was a cover of US Singer Robert Parker’s 1967 single, “I Caught You In A Lie“, and Louisa Mark owned it with beautiful vocals and delivery as she spoke about catching a cheating lover, and discovering what he was up to. The song was performed by a 15 year old Mark, who was a big winner at various talent shows, and was a result of  her first recording session which was given to her by Dodd. The song became an instant hit and was well loved by listeners in Europe and other parts of the world, and was considered the first Lovers Rock single.

Since the release of “Caught You In A Lie”, Louisa Mark followed up with a couple more hits, and released her only album “Breakout” in 1981 (“Caught You In A Lie” would be later added in a remastered version of the album). She enjoyed a career in the 80s that saw the release of some singles, but life happened, and she didn’t put out anymore music until 2004. Sadly she passed away in 2009, but she left her mark (no pun intended) on music with kicking off the official Lovers Rock movement.

Dancehall Artist Alkaline may not drop music as often as some of his peers, but best believe the fanbase shows up when he drops something new. Still making moves and still owning a huge following, it may be time for a new project from him. While we wait, he lets go the new single, “Boss“.

Produced by Autobamb Records and Sart Out Records (R.I.P. Dane Sortie 🙏🏽), Alkaline lets you know that he only makes boss moves, and is calling all the shots. Don’t take him for a simple person, and it won’t go bad. Still throwing shots here and there, but Alkaline still holds his own. “Boss” is the 4th single released in recent weeks, and we look forward to see what’s next from him.

Recording Artist Kxng Izem has been building on his music and name for the past few years, and has gotten through a few doors in the process. With a number of singles and projects out, he maintains a steady work ethic, and has people eager to see what he’ll do next. This time around, he tries something new, and they’re called, “Midnight” and “Til Dawn“.

“Midnight” and “Til Dawn” are Kxng Izem’s latest EP releases. Doubling up this time around, he hopes this new endeavour gets in the right places, and levels up his profile. Featuring 6 songs each, Izem taps into different themes and topics, while giving listeners his signature sound and delivery. Production on the EPs come from his Ten24 Music, Island.Wav  Entertainment, Shakespeare Production, Sweet Rush Music, and Delagroove Production while Kalex and Mila.Akilah make guest appearances. Keep this one in rotation, and play it from midnight, til dawn!

The Harry J Allstars’ “Liquidator” Featured In New @TedLasso Episode

It has been said over and over that good music will always prevail. When it comes to Jamaican music, the same can be said as it has managed to stick to many through the decades. Recently, the Apple TV+ hit series “Ted Lasso” returned with its 3rd season. The series focuses on Ted Lasso who is played by Jason Sudeikis, an American Football (NFL) Coach who takes his talents to the UK to manage a British Football (Soccer) team. The 2nd episode of the 3rd season kicked off on March 22, and a familiar sound was heard.

In the episode “(I Don’t Want To Go To) Chelsea” of “Ted Lasso”, The Harry J Allstars’ “Liquidator” was featured. The Instrumental was produced by Harry “Harry J” Johnson, and released through the Harry J label. “Liquidator” was sampled by Al Bell for The Staple Singers’ classic “I’ll Take You There“, covered by numerous Artists, and was famously used as run out music for the Football Clubs Wolverhampton Wanderers, Northampton Town, Yeovil Town, West Bromwich Albion, and most famously, Chelsea, who claims to have 1st used it.

“Ted Lasso” is now available for streaming on Apple TV+.

With 25 Islands to choose from, Audiomack will select a top DJ from each Island, who will then curate a Playlist that features homegrown talent.

Top selectors from the Caribbean including Jamaica’s Boom Boom, DJ Spade from Turks & Caicos, Trinidad’s DJ Echo, Rusty G from Bermuda, and TroopahLive From the Virgin Islands, Guyana’s PriinceMuzik, DJ Quest from Antigua, and Haiti’s Michael Brun have been recruited, and are gearing up to launch their respective Playlists featuring their handpicked Artists.
