OLDIES SUNDAY: Jahmali – El Shaddai (1997)

2025 has started off with a number of incidents, and hopefully they aren’t indications of what to expect for the rest of the year. When it comes to music, we just have to deliver content where one can find some peace and order for a few moments. Today’s “Oldies Sunday” selection comes from Reggae Artist Jahmali, and we highlight his single, “El Shaddai“.

Produced by Donovan Germain and released through Penthouse Records in 1997, Jahmali provides a song of rejoicing in, “El Shaddai”. The title means “God Almighty“, and the song encourages listeners to find peace in God every time. The song speaks on what’s going on in the world, and aims to be a guide for those who need a center, and a push into the right direction to fulfill their destinies. “El Shaddai” quickly became a hit for Jahmali, and spread throughout the world. The song was featured on the 1998 album of the same name, and became Jahmali’s biggest hit. The song was sampled in 2015 by Reggae Artist Exco Levi, and featured Jahmali as well.

Since the release of “El Shaddai”, Jahmali went on to release more music over the years. He is still active in Reggae, and many still remember his hit single.

Thank You Jahmali For This Classic!

.@ItsToian Featured On @SpiderVerse Soundtrack With @MetroBoomin, @RedRatMusic Classic Gets Sampled

Dancehall-Pop Recording Artist Toian has been on the grind. Been a while since we featured her, but she has been putting the work behind the scenes. Based in Miami, she secured a number of collaborations, and released a project or two. Remember her Ice Queen” collab with Vybz Kartel? “Ride The Wave“? What about “Rude Boys“? Her name has been called up recently in what you could call one of her biggest career moves, and that’s making the connection with SuperProducer Metro Boomin, and the highly anticipated “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-VerseFilm.

Teaming up with WizKid, Beam, Don Toliver, and Metro Boomin, Toian jumped on the “Spider-Verse Remix” of “Link Up“. With a mix of Pop, Afrobeats, and Red Rat’sTight Up Skirt” sample, Toian’s here for the link up, but don’t catch no feelings. She fits well with her collaborators, bringing her sweet vocals, making for a nice addition to the featured production. Red Rat’s “Tight Up Skirt” was released in 1997 and produced by Buccaneer on the Opera House label, and was famously sampled by Samantha J. Expect a lot more from Toian in the future, maybe she’ll pop up on more collabs with your favourite Artists, or even have more of her music featured in Films. Congrats to the big Singer!

Baron - Christmas With The Baron on 13thStreetPromotions.com #TrinidadandTobago #Caribbean #AuldLangSyne

OLDIES SUNDAY: Baron – Auld Lang Syne (1997)

It’s Boxing Day part 1! We hope you all had a great Christmas Day filled with unity, laughs, good food, and gifts. We’re giving an Oldies Sunday selection for the final time in 2021. We thank you for giving it some support, and we look forward to even more in 2022. In true New Year fashion, we bring to you Trini legend Baron and his track, “Auld Lang Syne“.

Produced by Julian Williams and released through JW Productions in 1997, Baron gives us some Soca vibes with his version of the classic “Auld Lang Syne“. A song that helps to ring in the new year, Baron brings in some backup singers for a performance that goes very well with your favourite drink, and good people (via Zoom because we’re still social distancing). The track was featured on Baron’s “Christmas With The Baron” album which was also released in 1997. We hope you enjoyed 2021 despite all the madness that happened throughout. May 2022 be even better, and we stay safe and successful. Thanks for being a part of the Blog!

OLDIES SUNDAY: Killamanjaro Vs Bodyguard Sound Clash (1997)

While many are still feeling the vibes from last night’s staging of the Redbull Culture Clash, we’ve decided to take you all back a lil on Oldies Sunday! Today we go back to the year 1997 to check out one of Killamanjaro Sound System and Bodyguard Sounds‘ many sound clashes. Held in May Pen, Clarendon, Selectors Ricky Trooper (Killamanjaro) and Fire Links (Bodyguard) both went dub for dub, and song for song with their teams in a clash that is still a memorable one for many. With dubplates and songs from the likes of Monster Shack Crew, Bounty Killa, Sizzla, Beenie Man, and Shabba Ranks with plenty tough talk accompanying them, this clash was a hot one.

While many may have varied opinions on last night’s event, it’s always good to look back at some of the classic Sound Clashes. Let’s hope the floor is open to even more with huge sponsorships, and the rise of more Sound Systems. Check out the clash below and share with a friend. Today’s Oldies Sunday entry comes from Reggae artist, Luciano. Titled “Over The Hill” and produced by Phillip “Fattis” Burrell for Xterminator Productions in 1997 (Other sources say 1996), Luciano sang about the wrongs that were going on in the world, wanting to take away himself from the “Jungle” created by mankind and head to the hills to be free from all the madness. “Over The Hill” was featured on Luciano’s 5th album “Messenger” which was also his 2nd album released in 1997 on Island Records.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Buju Banton – Love Sponge (1997)

As we are facing the closing hours of this Valentine Weekend, there’s nothing like the oldies to add a finishing touch. Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from Mark Myrie a.k.a. Buju Banton and it’s dedicated to all the lovers. Titled “Love Sponge” and produced by Buju for Gargamel Productions in 1997, we hear Buju making a dedication to his lover. He goes on to detail how much she means to him, when they’re together they enjoy each other’s company, they make great things happen, and when they’re apart he gets miserable. With Buju’s infectious delivery, choice lyrics and a great production, this song went on to become one of Buju’s biggest hits and a song that’s made for couples when it’s time for a slow dance.
