OLDIES SUNDAY (Christmas): The MerryMen – Drink A Rum (1974)

It’s December, and that means it’s Christmas time! No matter what has been happening in the year, we all look forward to this holiday season. With the holidays come time off for the schoolers, and for the older crowd it’s party time in every way, or an extra payday. For today’s Oldies Sunday selection, we head over to Barbados, who just celebrated their Independence Day, to check out The Merrymen’s version of, “Drink A Rum“.

Produced by The Merrymen for Merry Disc and released in 1974, “Drink A Rum” is a cover version of Trini Calypso legend Lord Kitchener’s 1959 track of the same name. The Merrymen group, which is consisted of 5 members, all performed the track, blending harmonies and instruments for a song that celebrated the drinking part of the holiday season. Rum in various forms are consumed, and they are sure to bring the joy, warmth into the chilly time, and “kick” into the joyous occasions. While the original “Drink A Rum” was a popular Calypso song, their version did well in Barbados, throughout the Caribbean, and other parts of the world, and became a song that enjoyed radio airplay around the Christmas season. The track was released on their 1988 Christmas album, “Caribbean Christmas Party“. The group have been enjoying a considerable amount of fame, and they performed the song on the road.

New York-based Rapper/Educator Chip Fu of the legendary Fu-Schnickens is making a return to the music in a major way. Having taken himself away from the limelight for quite some time, and is returning to the scene with new energy. With a new EP on the way, he’s gearing up with, “Like Us“.

Co-Produced with Bird On The Beat Productions, Chip Fu returns to the scene with an ode to the Boom Bap era. Kicking off a crazy series of flows, the MC takes listeners back to the days when FU-Schnickens shook the world with their unique sound, and Chip is keeping the fire burning. Accompanying the track is a Music Video directed by Owlman Productions, and it finds Chip exhibiting that style that makes him an MC who went toe to toe with the best of them. The video also previewed a follow up track, and paid homage to his Trini and Bajan background. Chip Fu looks to make bold statements when he drops his “Invisible Foot Steps” EP in October, and will feature a Dancehall track with NBA legend/Rapper/Personality Shaquille O’Neal. The self-produced “Ova Do It” finds Shaí Bascombe paying full attention to the lovely ladies out there, but emphasis on one special lady. From the way she wears her hair, her no-filter beauty, her ability to stand out, and possessing the good body has Shaí thanking God that she’s in his life. Grateful Co Wants To Be Free From Stress In “No Horn”

Crop Over time is gonna be a special one this year, but to be honest, it has always been special. With the various music releases being churned out, we know that the people will be in for an amazing time. One person who is looking forward to it is Bajan Soca Artist Grateful Co as he looks forward to not only a fun Crop Over, but a stress-free life. He speaks about it in the new single, “No Horn“.

Produced by Decibel Production and Green Shanti and released through The Parris Agency, Grateful Co is determined to be free of harmful relationships in “No Horn”. He shares some of his experiences with ungrateful and deceptive Women, and he is tired of how they have affected him. No more sulking, no more stressing over somebody’s Daughter, and no more complaints because these Women can’t be completely satisfied. Grateful is packing up and embracing peace. “No Horn” is featured on the “Progressive Road Riddim“, and you can expect even more music from him leading up to the Crop Over events this Summer.

Written by Bunny Alleyne, “Things Of Christmas” was released through Trex Records in 1973. It is a Spouge track performed by The Draytons Two about some of the things that are synonymous with Christmas time. From the food, to the gifts, to the fellowship, to the activities that happen during, to that special feeling you get during the holidays, the duo delivered the track well with great harmonies over solid production. “Things Of Christmas” became a popular track, and would get played during the holidays.
