It may be a wet weekend thanks to a couple Tropical Storms throughout the Caribbean, but we’re giving thanks for life, and praying for those who are battling the bad Weather. We hope you all have been staying safe in your own way. We’re bringing a different vibe on today’s Oldies Sunday. Today’s selection comes from Reggae/Dancehall Artist Determine with the track, “Rappin Up Rhymes“.

Produced by Steely & Clevie on the “Nine Night Riddim” and released in 2001 through Studio 2000, Determine stepped out on a song that showcased his unique flow, and his ability to control any Riddim that was thrown his way. Determine had a few hits in the 90s, and he presented himself as an Artist that stood out no matter what. “Rappin Up Rhymes” was just one of his many examples, and the track was a hit. In promotion of “Rappin Up Rhymes”, a music video directed by Llewellyn O’Reggio was released. The video found Determine chilling with the ladies at the River, interacting with many people in his hometown of Portland including his fellow Rastafarian brethren, and we see an appearance from members of his family including a young Runkus. Determine is still an active member in the Jamaican music scene, and many of his fans still remember “Rappin Up Rhymes” and his previous releases.

Social Media Personality/Recording Artist Queen Ladi Gangsta, more popularly known as Queenie, has been a topic of much controversy, and she has managed to make it work for her. Thanks to her many episodes on Instagram Live and TikTok, she has shared so much. When she’s not sharing details about her relationship, she invites viewers to some of her past experiences, but she has kept her flock entertained in every step of the way. Controversy aside, she has been holding her own as an Artist in the past couple years. Today, she uses her music to make a bold statement. We check out the visual for her single, “One Man To Mi Goodie“.

Directed by Sikk Films/Shy Media and featuring her Husband Dowey, Queenie sets the record straight that there is only one man for her. Dowey emphasizes that Queenie is the only one for him, and together they solidify their sometimes tumultuous relationship in video and song. A preview of “One Man To Mi Goodie” gained viral love over the past few months on Social Media, so we expect the music video to make even more impressions. Ai Milly Is Living It Up In New “Villa” Visual!

Dancehall Artist Ai Milly has been one of the more talked about Artists in the past few months. With his name gaining traction on Social Media, he has been releasing songs that quickly became favourites amongst younger listeners. TikTok has been one of the platforms that hugely supports his content, and he’s working his way up the Jamaican music ladder. His hard work has been yielding great rewards, and he enjoys it all in the video for the track, “Villa“.

Directed by Magnus Productions, Ai Milly finds himself living it up in Ocho Rios with a few friends, plenty money to go around, and of course the ladies. While he’s enjoying life on the North Coast, he is still getting to work, and making his money stack up. The era of “Chop Dancehall” has produced a few local and regional stars, with a promise that some will have a taste of International success very soon. “Villa” was produced by Carey Villa Records, and fans can look out for even more from the Recording Artist.

Recently, Comedian/Recording Artist Kyng Tavii had a moment of controversy. He revealed that he worked with currently incarcerated Dancehall Artist Tommy Lee Sparta on a few songs. Their working relationship however ended on a bad note, and Tavii chose to share his information after being accosted by associates of Tommy Lee. While Tavii faced some opposition and doubt that his talents were good enough to use in collaboration with the Dancehall Artist, he chose to share original material that would prove that he was legitimate. The track “This Is Not A Love Song” is one of his original pieces.

Produced by PeeKay Beatz, Kyng Tavii shows off another side to his sound on the R&B-tinged “This Is Not A Love Song”. Geared towards the ladies, Tavii puts together slick lyrics, a melodic delivery, and a great command of the original production for a song that sounds like a hit. Even the people who bashed him behind the scenes can’t deny that Kyng Tavii is legit with the music. Don’t worry, Kyng Tavii will be back with the Comedy soon, just get familiar with the music.

Dancehall Artist Govana continues to stay consistent with the content, and his track record is one to respect. “Govi Govi” has definitely improved since his “Deablo” days, and since the release of his “Humans And Monsters Are Not The Same” album, the output has significantly increased. Known for his “gyallis” songs, he unleashed the new single called, “BFF“.

Produced by Dunw3ll on the “Play Station Riddim“, Govana gives us another saga in his journey of being a ladies man. The standout this time around, is the single’s Visualizer, which was created by Jamaican Digital Artist, KxrlyMiyagi. Kxrly has previously worked with the likes of Japanese Dancehall Artist HibiKilla, Recording Artist/Producer Kris Karz, Marijuana brand LiveHigh, and Recording Artist Leno Banton. Kxrly gives Govana’s “BFF.” a visual style that takes us back to the days of 8Bit Graphics, which can be found in old school video games. The unlikely collaboration proves to be a great look, and we look forward to more from KxrlyMiyagi. Govana stays busy with the music, and was previously featured on the single, “Riches & Power” with Dancehall duo, The Yutes.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Brick & Lace – Love Is Wicked (2007)

For today’s Oldies Sunday selection, we go back to a time when Trucker Hats were back in style, Von Dutch was a brand people were familiar with, Jamaica was trending Internationally thanks to a few great Jamaican Artists, and this Jamaican girl group were on the verge of blowing up overseas. That girl group originally consisted of sisters Nailah, Nyanda, and Tasha Thorbourne, but was later reduced to just Nailah and Nyanda, and they were called, “Brick & Lace“! Today, we check out “Love Is Wicked“.

Produced by Steven “Lenky” Marsden on the “Diwali Riddim“ and released in 2007, Brick & Lace spoke about a love that despite being everything they wanted and they’d give their all for it, that person that gave the love never belonged to them, and has resulted in hurt. The song’s upbeat production made it a danceable one, and the hook was very catchy. The deliveries on “Love Is Wicked” stood out thanks to Nailah’s singing and Nyanda’s singjaying, and it quickly became a hit in Jamaica, and parts of the world.

“Love Is Wicked” successfully crossed over to the International market, and was featured in the soundtrack to “Bratz: The Movie“, got featured on “Jimmy Kimmel Live“, was included in the soundtrack for the “Sims 2” video game, and has enjoyed a number of remixes. Brick & Lace capitalized off the success of “Love Is Wicked” with a debut album of the same name which was released in 2007.

Since the release of “Love Is Wicked”, Brick & Lace went on to release a few more singles while being signed to Akon’s Kon Live label, formed a songwriting team with sisters Tasha and Candace called Bloodline, launched solo careers (Nailah goes by “Nyla” while Nyanda used her name), and the duo is currently enjoying TikTok love as “Love Is Wicked” has been gaining viral success since 2021, and grew even more thanks to TikToker Cynesse. Will the Thorbourne sisters return to the scene as a duo? Who knows, but “Love Is Wicked” remains a classic.
