Jamaican music is still winning, don’t forget that. Recently, the legendary Toots & The Maytals blessed The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’s set, and gave them a double dose of that good music. Performing the classic “Funky Kingston“, they also premiered a new single titled “Marley“. Fans will love this, and others will learn about one of the Jamaican staples. Funny enough, yesterday we featured a single from Toots Hibbert’s Grandson, Blizzi that you can check out here. The youngest Veteran Damian “Junior Gong” Marley recently stopped by Hot 97’s “Ebro In The Morning” Radio show. Hosted by Ebro, Laura Stylez and Peter Rosenberg, Gong spoke on his “Distant Relatives” collaborative album with Rapper Nas still being popular today, the Marley name still being a strong one, starting his own Medical Marijuana business with Ocean Grown Extracts, sharing his favourite songs from his father, his thoughts on Dancehall music today, being an advocate for the legalization of Marijuana in Jamaica and more. While “Distant Relatives” is still a popular album along with his solo albums and Ghetto Youths International compilations, I know fans are just waiting for the next solo project from the Gongzilla in January. Stay tuned. Check out the video below and share your thoughts in the comments section.
Today’s new video comes from the combination of Etana and Jo Mersa Marley. Titled “Thy Will Be Done” we hear Etana and Jo Mersa dropping message music and speaking on the issues affecting Jamaica and its people. In the video Etana’s part is shot in different communities highlighting the youth and the adults that reside there and also scenes of her performing at an event while we see Jo Mersa delivering his part in the studio. A great combination here as the “Strong One” and the 2nd generation Marley deliver conscious music that will reach the ears of many. Great shots of the various communities and the people that reside there. Check out the video below and share your thoughts in the comments section.
Ready to start a riot is the duo of Sean Paul and Damian Marley. Releasing the video to their “Riot” single, we see both artists deejaying their message amongst decay and havoc made by riot starters. Very clean video which was directed by Jon J and a great effort from Sean and Damian. That guy with the dreads and gold teeth looks like he was born to cause havoc (lol). During the height of my Installation season (a.k.a “Pretty Season“) I noticed I was having difficulty managing my hair. Usually when it gets this way, I give it a break and opt for protective styling. My first choice is usually a sew-in but this time I decided to research some other options for protective hairstyles. One “new” discovery was Marley Twists.
I didn’t know anyone who tried this style and my regular hairdresser has no clue what they are, so I ruled it out and settled for “Patra” braids.
Last week though my friend Wade (who knows my obsession with Hair & Beauty) reintroduced me to the Marley Twist concept when he introduced me to hairstylist Teresa Simpson (@VirgoChykTessie). My interest was sparked and I pondered getting them!
