Life has it challenges, how we handle them determines a positive or negative outcome. Overall, we just want better, and we’re in one piece through it all. Reggae Artist Jah Lil has his share of ups and downs, but he is determined to make good things happen. He is a fighter, and he looks to encourage us with the new single, “Above Water“.

Produced by Ziah Push through Habitat Studios and released through Out Deh Records/Give Thanks Music, Jah Lil provides some positive words on “Above Water”. Many of us are fighting battles, and the song comes as a cloak of strength for the trying times. Accompanying the new single, is a Music Video directed by Fernando Hevia, and it finds Jah Lil not only connecting with the water, but adding to the message that we’re just trying to stay above the craziness. Jah Lil has been on the scene for some time, but expect him to be everywhere this year. Keep your head up.

Music By Alton Ellis, Cornel Campbell Featured In New @SmithsOnPrime Series

For all the TV junkies, a new show has emerged, and we know you’ll tune in. Recently, Amazon premiered their new series, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” on their Prime Video platform. Inspired by the 2005 Film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, the series stars Actor/Producer/Recording Artist Donald Glover a.k.a. Childish Gambino, and Actress/Writer Maya Erskine who play Assassins/Secret Agents for an organization under the cover of a married couple. The Spy Comedy/Action series has been anticipated for quite some time, its soundtrack features some great tracks. In a couple episodes of season 1, familiar music from Jamaica was featured.

In Episodes 2 and 3 of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”, “Pearls” by the late Vocalist Alton Ellis, and “Dream Girl/Girl Of My Dreams” by Reggae Singer Cornel Campbell were played in a couple scenes respectively. “Pearls” was produced by “Sir Coxsone” Dodd for Studio One, and featured on Ellis’ 1969 “The Best Of Alton Ellis” compilation. “Dream Girl/Girl Of My Dreams” was produced by Bunny “Striker” Lee, and released through the Jackpot label in 1972. “Girl Of My Dreams” was sampled by La Fine Equipe, and by Naomi Cowan for her hit single, “Paradise Plum“. Both songs are certified classics, and made for great additions for the “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” soundtrack, which also features other songs with love themes. If you haven’t been familiar with the new series, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Aston “Family Man” Barrett – Soul Constitution (1971)

Before we start off today’s Oldies Sunday, we want to send our condolences to the families of the late Alan Magnus, and the late Aston “Family Man” Barrett who made their transitions over the weekend. May their legacies live on.

On Oldies Sunday, we’ve highlighted many who have made the music we love. From Vocalists to Musicians, they have provided sounds and vibes beyond our imaginations, scoring hits, and faves in the process. Today, we highlight a Musician who was the backbone of a few important Bands in Jamaican Music. His name is Aston Barrett, many know him as “Family Man” Barrett, and we highlight his track, “Soul Constitution“.

Arranged by Aston Barrett and featuring Musician Glen Adams, “Soul Constitution” was released through the Star Apple label in 1971. The Instrumental track features Aston’s signature basslines, backing by additional Instruments, and a soulful vibe throughout that could easily be the theme music for a TV show. “Soul Constitution” was one of Barrett’s many productions, and was re-issued in 2016, and included in his 2016 album of the same name. It was also sampled on the 2007 track “Engine Running” by Hip Hop Artists Talib Kweli and Consequence, and Producer Madlib.

Aston “Family Man” Barrett was a member of Bob Marley & The Wailers, The Hippy Boys with Lloyd Charmers, the Barrett Brothers with his Brother Carlton, and The Upsetters with the late Lee “Scratch” Perry. He was a Producer who co-produced, engineered, and played on albums by Bob Marley & The Wailers, Judy Mowatt, Burning Spear, Keith Hudson, Augustus Pablo, Max Romeo, and many others including his own albums. He has been celebrated by many, and was recognized by legendary Musicians/Artists/Publications, and was awarded the Order of Distinction in 2021 during Jamaica’s National Honours and Awards. He was also highlighted in the upcoming “Bob Marley: One Love” Film played by his son, Aston Barrett Jr. Aston “Family Man” Barrett passed away on February 3, 2024, but left behind a legacy that will span generations, and like his nickname, a large family both biological and social.

T’Jean Shares His “Ancient Intelligence” With New EP

Reggae Artist/Activist T’Jean has been a dominant force for a number of years. Armed with powerful lyrics and a strong militant presence, he is a voice for the people, and not the one to be taken lightly. Having released a number of hard hitting tracks over the past few months, he’s ready to teach you A.I. Not the A.I. that has been the topic of many outlets, but the “Ancient Intelligence” with his new EP.

Featuring 7 tracks, “Ancient Intelligence” is some of T’Jean’s best work. The EP follows up the 2020 “Tief In The Night” album, and the Artist continues to stand up against injustice and corruption, promote the strong messages of Rastafari, and reinforce a consciousness that many have slipped away from. The EP features production from Izreal Records and Jdeacs Records, which have provided the right sounds to back up T’Jean’s powerful presentations. Produced by Haze St.Dub for DubShot Records, Ras-I speaks about a love that is very dear to him on “Days & Months”. Despite distance and naysayers, it’s when he’s close to his love that everything is alright. Many will relate to the lyrics, and will definitely be in their feels. Accompanying the single, is a music video directed by Birhan Tonge, and it finds Ras-I with his love interest connecting with each other in different settings. Jamaican Music continues to make a bigger presence in more of the things we enjoy, and we love it. Recently, Video Streaming giant Netflix released the Sci-Fi drama, “The Kitchen“. The Film stars British Rapper/Actor Kane “Kano” Robinson and Jedaiah Bannerman, and was directed by Kibwe Tavares, and Daniel Kaluuya, known for the Films “Black Panther“, and “Get Out“. The British Film focuses on the characters Izi and Benji (Played by Robinson and Bannerman respectively) as the manoeuvre through a dystopian future London, as residents of the housing project, “The Kitchen”. The Film is filled with great visuals, and a selection of music that range from 80s hits, to Afrobeat, to UK Rap, to familiar Jamaican music that we share with you below.

Music from “The Kitchen” included the Jamaican hits “Stay So” by Dancehall Artist Busy Signal, and a dub version of “Walk Away From Love” from British Reggae Singer, Bitty McLean. “Stay So” was produced by Dameon Gayle for Warriors Musick on the “New Box Riddim“, and released in 2017. “Walk Away From Love” is a cover of US Singer David Ruffin’s 1975 hit, and featured production from the era of Duke Reid productions on his Treasure Isle label. Both the dub and single versions of “Walk Away” are featured on McLean’s 2004 album, “On Bond Street KGN. JA.“. Both songs have made significant marks in the careers of the respective Artists, and adds to the ever-stirring pot of cultures that Immigrants have shared with the British scene as highlighted in the Film. “The Kitchen” has already gained favourable reviews online, and is a top 10 Film on Netflix.
