OLDIES SUNDAY: Johnny Nash – Hold Me Tight (1968)

February is recognized as “Reggae Month” in Jamaica, and in parts of the world. It is also Black History Month, and on “Oldies Sunday“, we’re celebrating Black Music. Today, we highlight History as we go back to the 1960s to check out American Reggae/Pop/Soul Singer Johnny Nash and his track, “Hold Me Tight“.

Co-Produced with Arthur Jenkins and released through JAD Records in 1968, Johnny Nash is making up with him lady through song in “Hold Me Tight”. Nash admits his mistakes throughout the relationship, and realizes that his lady is the right one for him, so he’s going to do all the right things to make the their union better. “Hold Me Tight” created History as being one of the first Rocksteady singles to be performed and released by a non-Jamaican, and it went on to become a top 5 hit in North America (securing a #1 in Canada), and earning a top 5 placement in the UK. It also paved the way for Nash to release even more Reggae/Rocksteady singles. “Hold Me Tight” was used in Commercials for the Score brand, was sampled by Tanya Stephens and Spragga Benz, and covered by the likes of Gregory Isaacs, Eddie Lovette, Anthony Swete, and Anita Harris.

Since the release of “Hold Me Tight”, Johnny Nash continued to release more albums and singles until the early 80s where he seemed to have disappeared from the spotlight. His career enjoyed some resurgence during the 90s, and started singing again in the 2000s. Johnny Nash passed away in October 2020 after his health started to decline for years. “Hold Me Tight” remains one of his most popular singles to date, and a part of Jamaican Music History.

When it comes to making money, it’s all about maximizing the revenue. For Dancehall Artist Raw Cashh, he’s all about getting it wherever it is. His money missions have taken him far and wide, and he’s ensuring that the dollar signs are always present. This time around, he has his sights set on Uncle Sam’s home in, “States Mad“.

In a Chadd Henry/Kreative Klique-directed video, Raw Cashh is gearing up to work overtime for the money in the visual for, “States Mad”. Over production by BrainFreeze Records, he has his game plan to tackle every state, his tools and assets in hand, and he’s confident that the money will come to him like blessings. Despite his methods of getting the money, he doesn’t want to join the many who are doing time for their pursuits of the cash flow. Raw Cashh has been putting out music for quite some time, and his fanbase has been growing locally, and Internationally. Hailing from Mandeville, Manchester, he’s holding his own, and his determination has been rewarding him over time. It’s money time.

Sizzla Kalonji Granted US Visa, Recruits New Management

For over 30 years, Jamaican Icon Sizzla Kalonji has delivered timeless songs with strong messages for the people the world over. He has greatly influenced many of his musical peers, and his contributions to the culture has placed him among legends. Parts of the world have longed for the Artist to grace them with his presence, and in the coming weeks, Sizzla will be making a return to one of them to perform, the United States. 

After a number of years of absence, Sizzla Kalonji will make the highly-anticipated return to the United States for a series of performances. The Artist’s US Work Visa was revoked well over a decade ago, but was granted a Visitor Visa in recent times. His stage presence on US soil was greatly missed however, and his return marks the end of the drought for the fans. Sizzla has been performing in various parts of the world during his absence from the U.S., and with his return, fans can expect him to make appearances at various events in the coming months, and are urged to stay tuned for announcements. As a part of the new developments for the Sizzla Kalonji brand, the Artist recently welcomed Chester Wilkins to the team, who will handle all managerial duties for the Artist. Wilkins has been in the Music Industry for a number of years, has made great contributions in Artist Development, and has provided solutions that have significantly enhanced the music business. Present and future bookings for Sizzla Kalonji will now be handled by the Harmonics Group, a European booking agency, artists management and development company. 

Sizzla Kalonji’s return to the United States is official in 2024. Announcements for upcoming performances will be made in short order on his official Media platforms.

Heph B Announces New World Tour, Hints At New Album

AfroDancehall Recording Artist Heph B has been enjoying a career that has granted him many high points. Having carved a lane and becoming a global name thanks to his various singles and projects over the years, Heph strongly believes in making music that will stand out, and become timeless. He looks to take the stage in various parts of the world this summer with the “AMARII Album World Tour”.

Announced recently after securing his latest plaque for the iTunes charting of his “AMARII (Deluxe)” album, Heph B is gearing up to take his music to the people in a major way. Starting on June 22 in the Dominican Republic, Heph will perform cuts from the “AMARII” and “AMARII (Deluxe)” albums along with a number of previously released singles, with focus on promoting unity, good vibes, and endless fun along throughout. Joining him on the tour will be Nigerian Artist Bolojay, who has been making waves with his music over the years, along with surprise guests. Aside from the Dominican Republic bookings, the “AMARII Album World Tour” will also make stops throughout the United States, the UK, The Bahamas, and Jamaica, and will take place between June and October. Promoters who wish to book Heph B for more venues during the tour, are encouraged to reach out to his management and bookings team as there will be a few open dates for more shows.

In addition to the new tour, Heph B has also announced that he will be releasing a new album during the 4th quarter of 2023. A new single to start the album’s rollout will be revealed in the coming weeks.

OLDIES SUNDAY: @BigMountainBand – Baby I Love Your Way (1994)

It’s another Oldies Sunday, where we highlight a few classics, and old school songs you’ve never heard before. For today’s selection, we fly over to San Diego, California to check out Reggae Band Big Mountain’s “Baby I Love Your Way“.

Produced by Ron Fair, this was released in 1994 through Giant/RCA. Big Mountain’s “Baby I Love Your Way” was a remake of the Peter Frampton’s 1975 single. The remake had a Reggae vibe, which contrasted from the original’s Soft Rock sound. Big Mountain’s version enjoyed chart success peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, #2 on the UK Singles Chart, and #1 in Denmark, Spain, and Sweden. The track was included in the soundtrack for the 1994 Rom-Com, “Reality Bites“, and went on to go Platinum in Australia, Silver in the UK, and Gold in the US. The track was featured in Big Mountain’s 3rd album, “Unity“, and remains one of their biggest songs. They also performed the song at Reggae Sunsplash, as they were booked in 1994, and 1995.

Since the release of “Baby I Love Your Way”, Big Mountain went on to release more singles and albums, and continues to remain active performers taking their music to various parts of the world.

In preparation for his upcoming Album titled, “AYO“, he recently released “Supaman“! Produced by Randall Swain and Sam Girardot, Ayotemi speaks on meeting a woman who has been through a few things. Throughout the song, he shows her he can be the one to make her happy again, build her up, and help her see life in a more positive light. With that easy going Production and a smooth delivery overall, it does give the feeling of those retro Reggae singles that make you want to grab your partner and build a vibe with.
