February 6 marks the day two Reggae legends were born, Bob Marley, and Bunny Rugs. Bob Marley started out in Trench Town, and became a larger than life Icon while Bunny Rugs made his mark as a Solo Artist, and Lead Vocalist for one of Reggae’s most successful Bands, Third World. While many pay respects to them today, we’d like to look back at a few songs that further immortalized them through samples. Samples will come from Bob Marley’s solo singles, or with The Wailers, and from Third World Band during Rugs’ time. Enjoy!
1. Bob Marley & The Wailers – Johnny Was (1976)
Sampled on: Notorious B.I.G. – Hold Ya Head (2005)
2. Third World – Got To Get Along (1976)
Sampled on: Little Brother ft. Mos Def – Let It Go (2006)
3. Bob Marley & The Wailers – Zimbabwe (1979)
Sampled on: Akon – Don’t Matter (2006)
4. Third World – Lagos Jump (1983)
Sampled on: Damian Marley ft. Jimmy Cozier & Mr. Cheeks – Paradise Child (2001)
5. Bob Marley – Iron Lion Zion (1992)
Sampled on: The Game ft. Swizz Beatz & Jay Electronica – Higher (2010)
6. Third World – Now That We Found Love (Cover) (1978)
Sampled on: Heavy D & The Boyz ft. Aaron Hall – Now That We Found Love (1991)*
*Originally sampled The Ojays’ version, but we’re leaning to Heavy D being inspired by Third World’s version.
Happy Birthday Bob and Bunny!
