.@TheRulerNYC Samples “Double Barrel” For “Foreign” Track

In a world where many Kings reside, there is only one ruler, and that is Slick Rick the Ruler. The Hip Hop legend returns to music after 26 years with a new album called, “Victory“. The UK-born/New York-based Hip Hop Icon conquered the game with an unmatched style and storytelling, inspiring many to follow in his royal footsteps. On the new album, a track called “Foreign” featured a familiar sound that was a mega hit in Jamaica.

On Slick Rick’s “Foreign” off of his new album “Victory”, the classic track “Double Barrel” was sampled for its opening seconds. Produced by Winston Riley and released in 1970, “Double Barrel” was Dave & Ansel Collins’ smash hit. Featuring commanding vocals over some easy-going Instruments playing throughout, “Double Barrel” went on to become the 2nd Jamaican song to top the UK music charts. The track also introduced to the world a young Sly Dunbar, and is one of the most sampled Jamaican tracks in history (Check out our “Double Barrel” Playlist to hear some of the tracks that sampled it). “Foreign” features Slick Rick reflecting on his upbringing in a Jamaican Immigrant household, and his influences are highlighted through the use of Patois, and in his flow that borrows from Dancehall/Reggae Artists. “Foreign was produced by Slick and Rory Taylor, and was released through the Mass Appeal label, which is owned by Rapper/Mogul Nas. “Victory” is out now.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Powerman – Papa’s Love (2006)

Today is Father’s Day. Major respect to all the Men who have stepped up and ensured that their Children are loved, nurtured, and protected. For those who are no longer with us, may you continue sleep in peace. Today on “Oldies Sunday“, we share a dedication to all the Fathers out there. We tune in to Powerman’sPapa’s Love“.

Produced by Paul “Lowe” Chin on the “9-5 Riddim” and released through Lowe-Chin Productions/Chiney K Productions in 2006, Powerman makes a tribute to all the great Fathers out there in, “Papa’s Love”. He speaks on the hard working Men who take care of their Children, the Men who take the time out to raise their kids in the right way, and the Men who are devoted to good parenting. The Deejay believes there are good Fathers in the world, and they should be praised and respected. In a world where not much attention is given to Fathers, “Papa’s Love” was necessary. The track was also featured on Powerman’s 2012 album, “Ambition“. Father’s Day is at times met with opposition, and we should take the time to show love to the Men who want to be Fathers. Some Men never get a chance to be a Father due to various reasons, but play the role of Father figure when time calls for it. May “Papa’s Love” be a part of your Father’s Day Playlist, and Happy Father’s Day.

Big up All The Fathers Out there!
