OLDIES SUNDAY: Menudo – If You’re Not Here (By My Side) (1984)

We’re in the month of May, but the Oldies still play! May is also recognized as “Child’s Month“, and we may feature content where the children were stars. Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from Puerto Rican boy band Menudo with the track, “If You’re Not Here (By My Side)“.

Produced by Edgardo Díaz and Mary Lynne M. Pagan, “If You’re Not Here” was released through RCA Records in 1984. The track is the English version of the Spanish single titled “Si Tú No Estás, which was featured on the band’s 1983 Spanish album, “A Todo Rock“. The track was a love song that was lead by then member of the band Robby Rosa a.k.a. Draco Rosa about having that special person in his life, and things would not be the same without her especially during touring. This was a track that would connect with young Women, and it became a popular one in various parts of the world (including Jamaica), and was performed during live performances despite not charting high on (#36 on the US R&B Billboard charts, #102 on the US Hot 100 Billboard charts). “If You’re Not Here” was featured on the band’s 1984 English album, “Reaching Out“.

Menudo has been considered one of the biggest Latin boy bands in history with over 20 Million records sold. The band was also the starting point for Ricky Martin, who was a member for a few years during his youth and went on to have a very successful solo career. Since the release of “If You’re Not Here”, Menudo went through various lineup changes, breakups, reunions, controversies, and the death of two former members (Ray Reyes and Anthony Galindo). Regardless of all Menudo went through, many people around the world still play their music, including “If You’re Not Here (By My Side)”.

thank you menudo for this classic!

OLDIES SUNDAY: Pinchers – Bandelero (1991)

Happy Easter! While everyone’s out and about, we’re gonna make it real with today’s Oldies Sunday selection. For today’s post, we highlight a classic from one of Dancehall’s most unique voices. His name is Pinchers, and we feature his single, “Bandelero“.

Produced by King Jammys and released through Jammys Records in 1991, Pinchers stepped right out of a Western movie with this one. Calling himself a “Bandolero” (Spanish for Bandit), we get a track that makes reference to “Gringos“, Pinchers claiming that his lyrics are as sharp as the blade that Zorro owns, and being recognized as a champion. His flow was unique at the time paired with a bit of singing, and they helped to make “Bandelero” a hit. “Bandelero” went on to become one of Pinchers’ most memorable tracks, and is still enjoyed today. Pinchers is still active, and he takes his music from Kingston, Jamaica, to El Paso, Texas, to various parts of the world. A happy belated Birthday to Pinchers as well (April 12).

thank you pinchers for this classic!

OLDIES SUNDAY: ShineHead – Try My Love (1992)

Today, we celebrate a legend in Reggae/Dancehall. He was one of the Artists who helped to kick off that run of 90s Hip Hop/Reggae/Dancehall collaborations. He gained success during that time, and made classics. That man who we’re featuring on Oldies Sunday is Shinehead. We featured him in this section nearly 10 years ago, but today we celebrate his 60th Birthday (April 10) by featuring his single (and one of this Editor’s favourites), “Try My Love“.

Produced by Dave Hall and featuring background Vocals by R&B group Intro, Shinehead’s “Try My Love” was released through Elektra in 1992. The track finds Shinehead delivering his signature Singjay style as he spits slick lyrics to a young lady he’s admiring. With promises of dates, love, excellent care and treatment, to blowing her mind every time, Shinehead shares that he has what it takes to make her his. All he needs her to do is try his love, and she’ll never need another.

“Try My Love” became one of Shinehead’s popular singles, and was featured on his 1992 Album, “Sidewalk University“. Shinehead is still active in various circles, and can be found rocking the Mic at stage show near you, and releasing new music.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Mighty Diamonds – Right Time (1975)

This past week, we lost two Jamaican Music Icons. Gone are 2/3 of the legendary Mighty Diamonds, Donald “Tabby” Shaw, and Fitzroy “Bunny” Simpson. While their passing has left an indelible mark in Jamaica, we want to keep them alive through the music. For today’s Oldies Sunday selection, we highlight their track, “Right Time“.

Produced by Jo Jo Hookim for Channel One Studio and released in 1975 through the Impact! Label (and through the Locks Label in the UK), Mighty Diamonds’ “Right Time” became one of the group’s biggest and most known single. With smooth production, the group spoke of Marcus Garvey’s prophecies, and everything will change for many when the right time comes. “Right Time” was featured on the group’s debut album of the same name in 1976 through Virgin Records, a label that plays a major part of the group’s history and helped their International push as they were some of the first Reggae acts signed there. The Mighty Diamonds celebrated 50 years together in 2020, and was the longest group together in Jamaican music. With their name pressed in every part of the globe, their breakthrough really came at the “right time”. R.I.P. Donald “Tabby” Shaw and Fitzroy “Bunny” Simpson.
