Sonya Spence’s “Let Love Flow On” Featured In “American Fiction” Film

It’s awards season, and if you’re in Music or Film, chances are you’re one of the people who is a part of an award-nominated creation. One award show many look forward to is the 96th Academy Awards. One of the Films up for a few awards is “American Fiction“. “American Fiction” stars Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, and Sterling K. Brown, and it focuses on a Novelist/Professor named Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Wright) who out of frustration, wrote a satirical book on stereotypical Black people, that turned out becoming a success which has good and bad outcomes. The Film was released in December 2023 in Theatres, but was made available digitally on February 6. The Film features a selection of music that was played throughout, but in an important scene, a song from Jamaica was the soundtrack.

During a Wedding scene in “American Fiction”, “Let The Love Flow On” by the late Sonya Spence was featured. Produced by Sonia Pottinger and released through High Note Records in 1981, “Let Love Flow On” was a Reggae/Funk/Soul single that got Spence’s name out there. Sonya Spence was an Artist on the rise in the 1970s and 1980s, but her career was sidelined numerous times through a number of ways (You can see our Women’s History Month write up on her and this single here). (Editor’s note: I was happy and saddened by Sonya Spence’s song’s inclusion in the Film. Many Creatives worked hard for moments like these, but some of them never made it this far because they were robbed of it. Her story is truly a sad one. May she rest in peace.)

American Fiction” is out now on your favourite movie streaming platforms. Will it secure any of the big awards? Stay tuned.

EDGE Makes A Return To Music With Upcoming “1994” Single

Jamaican music has evolved in so many ways over the years, and with the evolutions come a slew of Artists and Creators who take the sounds to different levels. One of the Artists who contributed was James Lawrence a.k.a. EDGE. The St. Ann Rapper has made some noise over the years, has shown up in more ways as an Athlete/Stuntman (we featured his appearance in this Short Film), has collaborated with the likes of Popcaan and Skillibeng, and has earned recognition by brands like OVO Nocta. He took some time away from the music to focus on other things, but now he readies a return with the release of, “1994“.

“1994” will be EDGE’s return to the scene, a tribute to his true creative essence, and will showcase his evolution as an Artist, with a commitment to authenticity and self-expression. The single was produced by Justin “OooThatsJustin” Caine, and will be an experience for listener as he weaves through the captivating production with unique lyrics. “1994” will make its debut as a Music Video directed by Gareth Cobran, and will highlight EDGE’s hometown of Edgecombe in St. Ann, and capture his journey of self-acceptance, his story, and personality.

I want my fans to know that ‘1994’ is more than just a song; it’s a piece of me. Music has always been my truest form of expression, and with this track, I hope to connect with people on a deeper level, sharing my story and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

EDGE will take centerstage with “1994” come February 12 on all digital music streaming platforms.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Aston “Family Man” Barrett – Soul Constitution (1971)

Before we start off today’s Oldies Sunday, we want to send our condolences to the families of the late Alan Magnus, and the late Aston “Family Man” Barrett who made their transitions over the weekend. May their legacies live on.

On Oldies Sunday, we’ve highlighted many who have made the music we love. From Vocalists to Musicians, they have provided sounds and vibes beyond our imaginations, scoring hits, and faves in the process. Today, we highlight a Musician who was the backbone of a few important Bands in Jamaican Music. His name is Aston Barrett, many know him as “Family Man” Barrett, and we highlight his track, “Soul Constitution“.

Arranged by Aston Barrett and featuring Musician Glen Adams, “Soul Constitution” was released through the Star Apple label in 1971. The Instrumental track features Aston’s signature basslines, backing by additional Instruments, and a soulful vibe throughout that could easily be the theme music for a TV show. “Soul Constitution” was one of Barrett’s many productions, and was re-issued in 2016, and included in his 2016 album of the same name. It was also sampled on the 2007 track “Engine Running” by Hip Hop Artists Talib Kweli and Consequence, and Producer Madlib.

Aston “Family Man” Barrett was a member of Bob Marley & The Wailers, The Hippy Boys with Lloyd Charmers, the Barrett Brothers with his Brother Carlton, and The Upsetters with the late Lee “Scratch” Perry. He was a Producer who co-produced, engineered, and played on albums by Bob Marley & The Wailers, Judy Mowatt, Burning Spear, Keith Hudson, Augustus Pablo, Max Romeo, and many others including his own albums. He has been celebrated by many, and was recognized by legendary Musicians/Artists/Publications, and was awarded the Order of Distinction in 2021 during Jamaica’s National Honours and Awards. He was also highlighted in the upcoming “Bob Marley: One Love” Film played by his son, Aston Barrett Jr. Aston “Family Man” Barrett passed away on February 3, 2024, but left behind a legacy that will span generations, and like his nickname, a large family both biological and social.

Thank you Aston Barrett For Your Works. Sleep Well.
