Recording Artist Maticulus Auburn (sometimes shortened to just “Maticulus”) has been one of those Artists that wasn’t afraid to stand out. Even when the majority is focusing on one type of sound, he would test the waters of something different, and it showed in his releases over the years. Coming back to the scene after a short break, he shares the new track, “Bloody Sleeve“.

Produced by Jofis Beats, Maticulus Auburn gets experimental in, “Bloody Sleeve”. The song finds him expressing how it feels when the one you’ve been loving decides to walk away. He speaks about how her love made his house a happy home, the times that mean’t the world to him, and how important it was to have her in his life. Now that she’s leaving, everything comes crashing down, and he’s not in the best of feelings. Maticulus tries a different style this time around, and it fits him well. We may just get more music in this style, and possibly a project. With Valentine’s Day coming up, there will be a number of us who will be absent from the festivities, as we’ve experienced hurt, heartbreak, betrayal, and loss in other forms. Some will find themselves scrolling down timelines, others will get caught up in other activities. There will be some of us, like Maticulus in the song, who will be reminiscing on that lost love.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Gregory Isaacs – If I Don’t Have You (1981)

This Friday will be Valentine’s Day, and we know there will be many who will be in the loving mood, taking the time out to give their lover gifts, and take them out on dates. For the rest of the world, it’s just another Friday. We wanted to get ahead of the crowd with an “Oldies Sunday” selection that is nothing short of a classic. We go back to the 80s to tune in to “The Cool Ruler” Gregory Isaacs’ “If I Don’t Have You“.

The self-produced “If I Don’t Have You” was released in 1981 through the Pre and Charisma labels, Gregory Isaacs delivered a song so relatable with “If I Don’t Have You”. When it comes to someone you have a deep admiration and love for, you’ll want to do everything to ensure it’s perfect. For Gregory, he believes she is that one Woman that checks all the lists, is his ideal match, and his forever love. If he messes it up, he has no desire to seek another. “If I Don’t Have You” was an instant hit for Gregory locally and Internationally, and listeners fell in love with his signature smooth delivery, and the lyrics definitely connected. The track was included in his 1981 album, “More Gregory“. The track was also referenced in Brooklyn Rapper Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def) in his 1999 single, “Ms. Fat Booty“. “If I Don’t Have You” is considered one of Gregory Isaacs’ most popular songs, and it ranks high among his extensive catalogue.

Since the release of “If I Don’t Have You”, Gregory Isaacs secured his place as one of the legends of Jamaican music, releasing many albums and singles over the years. His life was cut short in 2010, but his music continues to live on. Many of his love songs are played during the Valentine’s season, including “If I Don’t Have You”. Sean Paul has earned his place as one of Dancehall’s Kings. With his contributions, he has brought Platinum success to the culture since the 2000s with a string of hits and albums, and continues to take the culture to various parts of the world. In recent times, his name has been brought up in the “King of the Dancehall” conversation, and for some reason, the “Jacket“/Paternity Fraud controversy. Not one to be involved in mixup, Sean has a few choice words for the detractors in, “Nah Follow Dem“.

Released through his Dutty Rock Productions, Sean Paul claps back at those who doubt his place as Dancehall royalty, and those who want to involve him in paternity mixup with “Nah Follow Dem”. The Deejay steps out with some aggressive delivery and lyrics, and sends a message to the public that he’s all about success, and not things that will bring him and his family down. He’s not following the crowd, and will keep it that way. This weekend is a historic one for the Deejay as he makes his return to Brazil to deliver great music. It has been 18 years since he has performed there, and promises to make it a weekend to remember. While they’re gossiping, Sean Paul is globetrotting.

The people have crowned him a King, and he continues to reign in his territory. For years, Ghana’s Shatta Wale has been dominating his Dancehall space, and his feats have made many compare him to some of the Dancehall greats in Jamaica. Last year, he made a formal introduction to Jamaica at Vybz Kartel’s “Freedom Street” Concert, despite having a presence here years before thanks to various releases and collaborations. He has come a long way, and he reflects in the “Rolls Royce“.

Produced by Damaker and Altrayd, Shatta Wale is living his best life in “Rolls Royce”. The Deejay looks back at the work it took for him to make it to the top, shows appreciation for the success he has gained, and looks forward to achieving even more, and motivating others in the process. Shatta has become quite the Businessman having scored hits, secured deals, and launched various initiatives, and his “Shatta Movement” continues to grow. OLDIES SUNDAY: Johnny Nash – Hold Me Tight (1968)

February is recognized as “Reggae Month” in Jamaica, and in parts of the world. It is also Black History Month, and on “Oldies Sunday“, we’re celebrating Black Music. Today, we highlight History as we go back to the 1960s to check out American Reggae/Pop/Soul Singer Johnny Nash and his track, “Hold Me Tight“.

Co-Produced with Arthur Jenkins and released through JAD Records in 1968, Johnny Nash is making up with him lady through song in “Hold Me Tight”. Nash admits his mistakes throughout the relationship, and realizes that his lady is the right one for him, so he’s going to do all the right things to make the their union better. “Hold Me Tight” created History as being one of the first Rocksteady singles to be performed and released by a non-Jamaican, and it went on to become a top 5 hit in North America (securing a #1 in Canada), and earning a top 5 placement in the UK. It also paved the way for Nash to release even more Reggae/Rocksteady singles. “Hold Me Tight” was used in Commercials for the Score brand, was sampled by Tanya Stephens and Spragga Benz, and covered by the likes of Gregory Isaacs, Eddie Lovette, Anthony Swete, and Anita Harris.

Since the release of “Hold Me Tight”, Johnny Nash continued to release more albums and singles until the early 80s where he seemed to have disappeared from the spotlight. His career enjoyed some resurgence during the 90s, and started singing again in the 2000s. Johnny Nash passed away in October 2020 after his health started to decline for years. “Hold Me Tight” remains one of his most popular singles to date, and a part of Jamaican Music History.
