Dancehall Music has always had its share of feuds and drama since its inception. What can happen out of the conflict are either great songs, flopped careers, a boost in profile, or a resolution where both parties make amends for the better. The mid to late 2000s saw the rise of the Portmore Empire/Gaza, Gullyside, The Alliance, and J.O.P. (now 4th Genna) camps, all headed by Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Bounty Killa, and Aidonia respectively. There was turmoil, with each camp having some form of beef. In one episode, Aidonia and Vybz Kartel started beefing, pitting their camps against each other. Today that beef is long gone, and we see Aidonia joining forces with Notnice, once a top Producer for Portmore Empire, to release the single, “Bottles“.

“Bottles” is a celebration of life and good times, with Aidonia for the first time recording over production by Notnice. Over a revamped version of the classic “Street Vybz Riddim” that was released in 2010, we’re popping bottles, living it up with friends, and building a vibe like no other “when bad song a drop“. The “Street Vybz Riddim” got new life at the end of 2023 with Chronic Law’sWeekend, and now Aidonia captains the Ship to make it one of the hottest Riddims for 2024. Fans will be taken back to the days of a very dominant Aidonia and his J.O.P. cohorts, and the times when Notnice was everywhere. We look forward to hearing more from this pairing, and who have been recruited to voice on the Riddim (Alkaline has been rumoured to be next up). Sometimes beef can end on a good note. J.O.P.!

Jamaican Music continues to make a bigger presence in more of the things we enjoy, and we love it. Recently, Video Streaming giant Netflix released the Sci-Fi drama, “The Kitchen“. The Film stars British Rapper/Actor Kane “Kano” Robinson and Jedaiah Bannerman, and was directed by Kibwe Tavares, and Daniel Kaluuya, known for the Films “Black Panther“, and “Get Out“. The British Film focuses on the characters Izi and Benji (Played by Robinson and Bannerman respectively) as the manoeuvre through a dystopian future London, as residents of the housing project, “The Kitchen”. The Film is filled with great visuals, and a selection of music that range from 80s hits, to Afrobeat, to UK Rap, to familiar Jamaican music that we share with you below.

Music from “The Kitchen” included the Jamaican hits “Stay So” by Dancehall Artist Busy Signal, and a dub version of “Walk Away From Love” from British Reggae Singer, Bitty McLean. “Stay So” was produced by Dameon Gayle for Warriors Musick on the “New Box Riddim“, and released in 2017. “Walk Away From Love” is a cover of US Singer David Ruffin’s 1975 hit, and featured production from the era of Duke Reid productions on his Treasure Isle label. Both the dub and single versions of “Walk Away” are featured on McLean’s 2004 album, “On Bond Street KGN. JA.“. Both songs have made significant marks in the careers of the respective Artists, and adds to the ever-stirring pot of cultures that Immigrants have shared with the British scene as highlighted in the Film. “The Kitchen” has already gained favourable reviews online, and is a top 10 Film on Netflix. OLDIES SUNDAY: Pluto Shervington – Your Honour (1975)

Recently, Jamaican music lost an Icon, the late Pluto Shervington. Quite the contributor to the culture, Shervington delivered a number of hits over the years, and lent his production prowess to a number of Artists. He will be missed by many. We’ve featured him previously, but today’s “Oldies Sunday” selection highlights his classic single, “Your Honour“.

Produced by Paul Khouri and released through the Wild Flower label in 1975, Pluto Shervington pleads his case in “Your Honour”. While held in Court, Pluto defends himself against an accusation that he was having relations with another man’s Wife. While he was caught in the couple’s bedroom closet and beaten by an angry Husband, he pleads that he is innocent, and shares that the Wife would defend him as he is a better man than the Husband. With its comedic element, “Your Honour” quickly became a hit for Pluto Shervington, securing a place in the UK Top 20 Music Chart. The song was included on the albums “Pluto” and “Again“.

Since the release of “Your Honour”, Pluto Shervington enjoyed a career locally and Internationally, performing at various venues, and releasing many more songs. No matter what’s going on in the world, Mortimer will step out with a love song. The Reggae Artist has been busy recording and performing in recent months, and even made appearances on records for other Artists.
