OLDIES SUNDAY: Gyptian – Serious Times (2005)

With the month of October coming to a close, we’d like to highlight an Artist who made a significant dent when his music crossed over to the International market. A man who didn’t stick to one style, and earned a number of hits along the way. He recently celebrated his 40th birthday, and his name is Gyptian. On today’s Oldies Sunday, we look back at his debut single, “Serious Times“.

Produced by Kenneth Wilson on the “Spiritual War Riddim” and released through the Frenz Label in 2005, Gyptian shared some social commentary on “Serious Times”. The Singjay shares his observations on what’s affecting his community and the rest of the world, offers advice to listeners in their daily navigations, encourages everyone to be more in tune spiritually and socially, and to give thanks for life above ground. With the help of some African-inspired production and his own smooth vocals, “Serious Times” became Gyptian’s first hit. The track was featured on his 2006 debut album “My Name Is Gyptian“, which went on to make an Artist to watch locally, and Internationally. “Serious Times” was covered by a number of Artists, and was performed by a Student Choir during one season of the Jamaican “All Together Sing” High School Choir competition series.

Since the release of “Serious Times”, Gyptian went on to release more music that increased his profile locally, and eventually making him a bigger name overseas. His is still an active Artist, and is instantly recognized for his biggest hit “Hold Yuh”, but many still remember the new Artist in the mid-2000s who stepped out with “Serious Times”.

We have been spelling her name for many years, and Dancehall Artist Tifa is still going strong. While she has been through a few things over the years and considered retirement at one point, she continues to show that her dedication to the music and her place as an important figure in Dancehall were not in vain. She aims for more, and can still hit you with some good music. She recently released her latest single, “Greetings“.

Produced by longtime colleague ZJ Chrome, Tifa makes a grand entrance on “Greetings”. She reminds listeners that she’s still one of the baddest Artists out, her presence is a gift, and she is as bold as ever on the microphone. Many have come before and after her, but there is only one T-I-F-A. Chrome’s bouncy production gives the lyrics some oomph here, and Tif fixes her crown and gives us the royal speech. There aren’t many like this hitmaker, and she has a lot more in store, so stay tuned. Say hi to a bad b****.

This past summer, the Jessicas of the world gained some extra confidence thanks to the release of the single “Jessica” by Michaël Brun, SAINt JHN, Charly Black, J. Perry, and J Balvin. The track did very well with the public, and was featured on Brun’s “FAMI SUMMER” EP. The song showed that when it comes to making hits, the Caribbean is elite in that department as various Islands represented for a summer hit. Brun wants to take it to another level with the release of the “Jessica (Island Remix)“.

With Michaël Brun (Haiti) behind the boards, we get the familiar hook of the original version of “Jessica“, but on the “Jessica (Island Remix)”, we get verses from J. Perry (Haiti), Charly Black (Jamaica), and the Soca legend, Machel Montano (Trinidad & Tobago). The new release promises to bring plenty in these chilly times, and will once again boosting the confidence of all the Jessicas. Expect this version to get the people moving again, and further emphasize that the Caribbean runs tings!

Independently released, Princess Ade gives us her 4th official single, and her 3rd for the year. The track finds her sharing a bond with her love interest that causes more than just sparks flying, and putting her in a position where meeting her is an out of this world experience. The AfroPop track features some smooth vocal-sampled production, and Ade gives us her sultry vocals throughout. True true true, wooooo. For today’s Oldies Sunday, we highlight a Jamaican Artist who was recently awarded the Order of Distinction at the National Heroes’ Day ceremony on Heroes Day (October 16). His name is Wayne Mitchell, but we know him as Wayne Marshall, and we feature his single, “Overcome“.

Produced by Lenky Marsden on the “Diwali Riddim” and released through 40/40 Productions in 2002, Wayne Marshall provided words of encouragement on “Overcome”. The Singjay highlights the hardships many experience daily, and with the right guidance, they can move past them all for a better life. Marshall provided his signature delivery throughout, complimenting the production perfectly, which resulting into a hit for him. Add to the popularity of the “Diwali Riddim”, “Overcome” was played everywhere, and gave Marshall more looks in various parts of the world. “Overcome” was featured on the debut album “Marshall Law“, which was released in 2003.

Since the release of “Overcome”, Wayne Marshall continued to enjoy a music career filled with a number of high points. Aside from the music, he enjoys life as a family man with Wife, former Recording Artist Tami Chin-Mitchell, became a successful Youtuber, was recently recruited by CVM TV for a talk show series, became a household name outside of music, and given one of Jamaica’s highest honours. Regardless of his path now, many remember his signature “True true true“, and his hit single “Overcome”.
