OLDIES SUNDAY: Foxy Brown – Oh Yeah (2001)

Closing off the Month of June with another “Oldies Sunday“ selection in recognition of “Caribbean American Heritage Month“. For today’s post, we go back to the 2000s to check Rapper Foxy Brown’sOh Yeah“.

Produced by Eddie Scoresazy and featuring Dancehall/Reggae Artist Spragga Benz, “Oh Yeah” was Foxy Brown’s assertion that she’s a Queen in Hip Hop, speaking her mind on a few observations, and display her dominance in the scene. Released through Def Jam Records in 2001, the track sampled “54-46 That’s My Number” by Toots and The Maytals, and interpolated “Punky Reggae Party” by Bob Marley and The Wailers. “Oh Yeah” was also a part of the launch of Brown and Benz’s relationship at the time, and it was further evidenced in the music video that was directed by Director X (then known as Little X). “Oh Yeah” was the first single of Brown’s 2001 album “Broken Silence“, but it was not successful when it was released. The track charted very low on Billboard, and was receiving little airplay on Radio. Despite this, it built its buzz in the streets through Mixtapes including a version with alternate lyrics on a DJ Envy-hosted “Best Of Foxy Brown” Mixtape, and live performances.

Since the release of “Oh Yeah”, Foxy Brown’s career had a number of setbacks. While she found success shortly after the release, she would find herself battling court cases, being dropped by Def Jam, slow to release music, and dealt with hearing loss. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Brown is of Dougla (Afro-Trini and Indo-Trini mix) and Chinese-Trinidadian descent. She shows her love for Trinidad and Tobago in a number of songs and media moments, along with namedropping Jamaica, but that has to do with her growing up in the melting pot of cultures in Brooklyn. She is a multi-platinum selling Hip Hop Artists, and one of the “Queens of New York Hip Hop“. She is recognized during Caribbean-American Heritage Month, and “Oh Yeah” went on to become of her signature tracks.

Thank You Foxy Brown For This Track!

OLDIES SUNDAY: @BustaRhymes – Woo-Hah!! (1996)

The Month of June is recognized as “Caribbean American Heritage Month“, and on “Oldies Sunday“, we want to highlight a few Artists who are a part of this. Today, we highlight Jamaican-American Hip Hop legend Busta Rhymes with the single, “Woo-Hah!! Got You All In Check“.

Produced by Rashad Smith and released through Elektra Records in 1996, Busta Rhymes made a crash with the single, “Woo-Hah!! Got You All In Check”. This was his debut as a Solo Artist since his departure from the “Leaders Of The New School“, a Hip Hop group that was formed with himself, Dinco D, Charlie Brown, and Cut Monitor Milo in 1994. The track’s opening was a burst of energy from Rhymes, and it gave many listeners an introduction of an Artist who would dominate the scene. “Woo-Hah!!” was inspired by Funk legend George Clinton of the Parliament-Funkadelic, Hip Hop group The Sugarhill Gang, and Dancehall’s style and delivery. Given Rhymes’ Jamaican background and the energy that Clinton’s music delivered, those were essential in the creation of this song. The song featured what would be described as the Rapper’s manic delivery with a bevvy of rhymes throughout, and it was instantly well-received. The single was followed up with a Music Video directed by Hype Williams.

“Woo-Hah!! Got You All In Check” was successful for Busta Rhymes as it gained high chart placements on Billboard in the US, UK, New Zealand, Sweden, and The Netherlands. The single was featured on Rhymes’ debut album, “The Coming“, and would go on to receive Platinum certification, selling over a Million copies. There was also a remix that was released shortly after featuring the late New York Rapper, ODB.

Since the release of “Woo-Hah!! Got You All In Check”, Busta Rhymes would cement himself as a Hip Hop legend, a Global Ambassador of Music, and a New York Hip Hop King. Born in Brooklyn, New York to Jamaican parents, he always recognized his Jamaican background and upbringing, and it would show in a number of songs he released, collaborations, and Media moments. He would release a number of albums and singles that would earn him high sales, worldwide popularity, and high-profile accolades, and he is still active in music. He is recognized during “Caribbean American Heritage Month”, and “Woo-Hah!!” remains one of his classic releases.

Thank You Busta Rhymes For This Classic!

The Month of June is recognized as “Caribbean American Heritage Month“, and today we close the Month on “Oldies Sunday“ with a Singer who has solidified himself as a legend. Today’s selection comes from Puerto Rican-American Singer/Actor Marc Anthony with “You Sang To Me“.

Co-Produced with Cory Rooney and released through Columbia Records in 2000, Marc Anthony was all about falling in love in “You Sang To Me”. Anthony delivers with smooth vocals over a solid production, and it was bound to command the listener’s attention in the first few seconds. According to a couple Interviews, “You Sang To Me” was inspired by Anthony’s relationship with Singer/Actress Jennifer Lopez as he fell in love with her while being married to another Woman. Eventually they became an item with Marriage and children, and divorced after 10 years. “You Sang To Me” was featured on his 1999 self-titled 4th Album, which went on to sell 4 Million copies. “You Sang To Me” was success for Marc Anthony as the single went #1 on Music Charts in the US, Canada, and Croatia, and was nominated for a GRAMMY in 2001. The song was certified Gold in Austria, Norway, and Sweden, but went MultiPlatinum in Jamaica as it is on almost every R&B/Souls Mixtape, and has lived on Jamaican Radio for a very long time. A number of remixes of “You Sang To Me” was released in 2000, and a Spanish version was released in 2006 on a compilation project.
