OLDIES SUNDAY: Happy Birthday @HarryBelafonte x Banana Boat Song (1956)

Today’s Oldies Sunday is dedicated to Singer, Actor and Activist, Harry Belafonte who celebrates his 88th birthday. His most famous song, “Banana Boat Song (Day O)” is the featured selection. Released in 1956 by RCA and written by Irving Burgie and William Attaway, this was adapted from the song Jamaican Banana Workers would sing while they toiled on the docks. The song was also featured on Belafonte’s million unit selling “Calypso” album. Harry achieved great success with this single as it peaked at #5 on the Billboard charts in 1957, made its debut performance on The Muppet Show, made an appearance in the 1988 film “Beetlejuice“, has over the years been covered by many artists, and sampled by Lil Wayne on the track “6 Foot 7 Foot“. Despite the previous version of the song and the covers, Harry Belafonte’s version stood out the most and has become one of his signature songs.

Anthony Bourdain is a man of the world. A former Chef, Author and Media Personality, he has dined in various places, embraced cultures and hung out and shared a vibe with just about everyone. In his new program “Parts Unknown“, he visits Port Antonio, and parts of St. Mary, Jamaica. No stranger to the Island, he gets down in the cuisine at various eateries, visited world renowned places such as the Trident Hotel and the Golden Eye Resort, and interacted with Billionaire Michael Lee Chin, former Record Producer Chris Blackwell, Actor Carl Bradshaw, Music Exec. Jon Baker and his wife Nordia Witter a.k.a. Dancehall artist Coco. There’s a lot to learn in this episode as we get a little history lesson and current event discussions, and experiences as Anthony drinks and eats to his heart’s content and gets a few sights. The Mento Band was really a great fit to this episode and much different to the Dancehall or Reggae music we’d hear in other programs. OLDIES SUNDAY: Stanley Beckford And The StarLites – Soldering (1975)

Hey Blogworld! Today’s entry in Oldies Sunday comes from the late Stanley Beckford (1942 -2007) who headlined the groups The Starlites, The Turbines and The Astronauts. He was a Mento singer who garnered many hits and won festival song competitions with his high pitched, nasal timbre laced delivery and interesting subject matter.
