It’s the month of June! For many, it’s considered a Wedding month, as many couples chose this month to jump the broom, get hitched, and make an honest partner out of each other. We’ve highlighted a few Wedding themed songs on Oldies Sunday, and today we give you another. For today’s selection, we head on over to Barbados to check out Lunar 7’s “Marry Me“!

Produced by Trex Records and released in 1972, “Marry Me” belongs to the Caribbean genre of music called, “Spouge“, which is a Ska/Calypso fusion that was originated in Barbados. The track is about a man who wants to spend the rest of his life with this one Woman, and he is tired of wandering. He shares his desire to come home to her, realizes what she’s all that his heart wants despite trying to be with other people, and he will tell the world how much she means to him. The track found favour with many during its release in the 70s, was used in a few Weddings, and remains a fond memory to some today. For those getting married this month, all the best from us!

It’s the month of June! For many, it’s considered a Wedding month, as many couples chose this month to jump the broom, get hitched, and make an honest partner out of each other. We’ve highlighted a few Wedding themed songs on Oldies Sunday, and today we give you another. Today’s selection comes from Junior Sledge with the track, “Be My Bride“.

Produced by George “Photographer” Lemon, “Be My Bride” was released in 1986 through the Photographer Label. On the track, Junior Sledge tells the lady in his life that she will be his Wife. He lists some of the many ways he feels about her, and makes the case that she will be his Bridge. Sledge delivers his track with some melodies over a Dancehall production. “Be My Bride” was a part of the “Photographer In a Dancehall” compilation that featured tracks with Admiral Bailey, Carl Meeks, Anthony Red Rose, and others. Greetings! How about a throwback? Today, we celebrate the birthday of a Jamaican Music Icon, and his name is Jimmy Riley! Today, we go back in time to check out his track, “Tell The Youths The Truth“!

The self produced track was released in 1978 through the High Note label in Jamaica, and in the UK through Trojan Records. On the track, Jimmy Riley spreads a message that everyone should be conscious of where they’re coming from, be proud of their roots, and call out those who choose to hide the knowledge. “Tell The Youths The Truth” was a hit for Jimmy Riley, and became one of his memorable singles. The track was featured on his 1978 album of the same name. Prior to his solo career, he was a member of The Sensations and The Uniques, and has worked with Bunny “Striker” Lee, and Sly & Robbie.

Since the release of “Tell The Youths The Truth”, Jimmy Riley scored more hits as a solo Artist, and assisted in developing the career of his son Tarrus. Jimmy Riley transitioned to the big dance session in the sky in 2016, and has left behind a legacy that will inspire many.

May is recognized as “Child’s Month“, and we’ll be featuring content where the youth were stars. Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from the Marley siblings Sharon, Cedella, Ziggy, and Stephen a.k.a. Ziggy Marley And The Melody Makers with the track, “Tomorrow People“.

Produced by Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, this was released through Virgin Records in 1988. On the track, Ziggy Marley And The Melody Makers provide some consciousness on this track. With lyrics like “Tomorrow people, where is your past? Tomorrow people, how long will you last?” over great production and energetic vocals, this was a song that made people think, and be entertained. “Tomorrow People” was featured on the group’s 3rd album, the 1989 GRAMMY winning Platinum selling “Conscious Party“. “Tomorrow People” has also been dubbed the “85th Greatest One-Hit Wonder of the 80s” by VH1.

Since the release of “Tomorrow People”, Ziggy Marley And The Melody Makers went on to release a few more albums, scoring 2 more GRAMMY awards, and flying the Marley flag as a group before disbanding in the early 2000s.

First off, Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms, Mamas, Grandmas, Aunties, Stepmoms, and every type of Mother. Wishing you all the best! Today on Oldies Sunday, we make a dedication to all of them. For our selection, we highlight Echo Minott’s “My Mommy“.

Produced by Harry “Big J” Johnson and released in 1984 through Shuttle Records (and in 1985 through Sunset Records), Echo Minott delivered a dedication to his Mother, showing immense gratitude in the process. While all of us have a great relationship with their Mother, Echo went into detail the important roles she has played in his life, and even showing love to his Father in some parts. “My Mommy” was well received by fans, and was featured on his 1985 album, “Rock & Calypso“.

After the release of “My Mommy”, Echo Minott went on to release more music before taking a break from the Music Industry in the early 90s, returning with a few releases in the 2010s, an album in 2021 called “Man A Do Road” with DJ Air Afrique, and a single in 2022 with Laurent Squarta.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Menudo – If You’re Not Here (By My Side) (1984)

We’re in the month of May, but the Oldies still play! May is also recognized as “Child’s Month“, and we may feature content where the children were stars. Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from Puerto Rican boy band Menudo with the track, “If You’re Not Here (By My Side)“.

Produced by Edgardo Díaz and Mary Lynne M. Pagan, “If You’re Not Here” was released through RCA Records in 1984. The track is the English version of the Spanish single titled “Si Tú No Estás“, which was featured on the band’s 1983 Spanish album, “A Todo Rock“. The track was a love song that was lead by then member of the band Robby Rosa a.k.a. Draco Rosa about having that special person in his life, and things would not be the same without her especially during touring. This was a track that would connect with young Women, and it became a popular one in various parts of the world (including Jamaica), and was performed during live performances despite not charting high on (#36 on the US R&B Billboard charts, #102 on the US Hot 100 Billboard charts). “If You’re Not Here” was featured on the band’s 1984 English album, “Reaching Out“.

Menudo has been considered one of the biggest Latin boy bands in history with over 20 Million records sold. The band was also the starting point for Ricky Martin, who was a member for a few years during his youth and went on to have a very successful solo career. Since the release of “If You’re Not Here”, Menudo went through various lineup changes, breakups, reunions, controversies, and the death of two former members (Ray Reyes and Anthony Galindo). Regardless of all Menudo went through, many people around the world still play their music, including “If You’re Not Here (By My Side)”.
