10 Songs That Made Impact In The 2020s So Far

We have officially crossed the half mark of the 2020s, and a lot has happened. In Jamaica’s music scene, many new Artists and movements emerged, some fell by the wayside just as quickly as they get the break, and others never made it to the 2020s for one reason or another. We remember those who passed away, and may their music and works live on. In remembering the first half of the 2020s, we look back at a few songs that made impact in the 2020s so far. These songs may have officially given the Artists their big break, rejuvenated a career or few, set Social Media and the streets on fire, and crossed over to the International market. Here are 10 of them in no particular order.

1. Valiant – Dunce Cheque (2022)

2022 was a year for Dancehall Artist Valiant. While he was building his career for a number of years, his name got the people’s attention thanks to a TikTok video. The video, which found him dressed in Ralph Lauren, gave the birth to the phrase, “Kotch E Hat A lie?“, which found life on Social Media thanks to various posts using the sound. From there, Valiant would capitalize off the buzz with singles like “St. Mary” and “North Carolina“. Those singles enjoyed love in the streets, but it was the Tarick-produced “Dunce Cheque” that took over households, and took flight to various parts of the world. The music video quickly hit over 1 Million views in a couple days, the single overall scored streaming numbers in the millions while securing a place in Dancehall and Social Media, and caused a few controversies thanks to the rise of the “Dunce” movement. Valiant officially became a star, and he keeps the fire going in 2026.

2. Skeng – Gvnman Shift (2021)

In 2020, people were made aware of an upcoming Dancehall Artist named, Skeng. The Spanish Town native was armed with aggressive lyrics and a presence that would unleash brimstone if he was approached the wrong way. He started to make noise with the gun-toting single “Brrp“, but it was his 2021 release “Gvnman Shift” that would open up the gates for him. His stance as an Intellectual who carefully detailed his badness throughout, placed him on the forefront of Dancehall music. The John Coop/DiTruth-produced “Gvnman Shift” enjoyed viral success, and even had kids in Basic School/Kindergarten reciting the lyrics word for word. Skeng became a star in the 2020s, with hit singles quickly following, and he successfully crossed over to the overseas market thanks to his collaborations with Rapper Nicki Minaj. Ay BWOY!

Jada Kingdom "London Bed" on 13thStreetPromotions.com #Jamaica #Dancehall #Music #13thStreetPromotions #StefflonDon #LondonBed #JadaKingdom #BurnaBoy #Talibans #StefflonDonDiss #Caribbean

.@JadaKingdom Counterattacks With “London Bed”

Earlier, we shared that Stefflon Don officially kicked off her beef with Jada Kingdom with her diss track called, “Dat A Dat. In the true spirit of feuds, Jada got to work, and has responded. Round one has started off in an interesting way, so here is the track, “London Bed“.

Taking over the “Talibans” Instrumental that made a hit with not only Byron Messia, but with Burna Boy, Stefflon Don’s ex, on a remix, Jada Kingdom takes over the guns to fire her shots at Stefflon Don. She doesn’t hold back with the disses herself, and she shows that she won’t be taking hits from nobody without sending a few back. It’s one thing when the males get to beefing, but when it’s the ladies’ turn, things get a little more exciting. Twinkle is mad. 2024, what’s next?

.@BurnaBoy & @Byron_Messia Team Up For “Talibans II”

It was gonna happen, and we’re glad it did. After taking over the place with his hit single “Talibans“, Byron Messia has been the talk of many towns. With arguably the hottest single of 2023, he has crossed over numerous markets, and various Artists (and AI) attempting remixes. With the week that Burna Boy has been having, it was only right that he officially released “Talibans II” with Messia.

Directed by 20K Visuals, Burna Boy and Byron Messia make the Nigeria x St. Kitts link up on “Talibans II”. They make for a great duo with their respective deliveries and lyrics, and we expect this one to do even more damage. The Artists are seen performing together with friends which include US Rapper Maxo Kream (who is from a Nigerian background), and UK Rapper Santan Dave (who also comes from a Nigerian background), and we see clips of Burna Boy’s birthday party that was held in Jamaica over the past weekend. We heard an AI version of Burna Boy performing “Talibans”, but his real version is even better. Get the guns ready.

.@Byron_Messia Is Fueled By The Hate On “I Hate Byron”

It’s no surprise that Dancehall Artist Byron Messia is one of the hottest Caribbean acts out. Thanks to his “Talibans” single, his name travels near and far, with many claiming he has one of the biggest singles of the year, as its crossover appeal rivals some of the best names out. With the love he’s getting, the hate is just as present. While some of the hate has been warranted through a few of his stumbles, he has room to grow, and you can’t write him off. With that said, he takes his stumbles as stepping stones on, “I Hate Byron“.

With a Shane Creative directed video, Byron Messia uses the hate to fuel him. Since he has become a global name, he has gotten his share of opposition on Social Media and in the streets, but he continues to push forward. He speaks on some of his experiences, but ensures that nothing will get in the way of his success. “I Hate Byron” was released through Ztekk Records. Messia maintains a consistency as he gears up for a new project to be released later this year. “Talibans” has afforded him even more placements, and we can say he will be a part of many end of year lists. Keep the Byron Messia flame burning bright.
