The 2019 Carnival season is officially on its way, and Dancehall artists are teaming up with Soca’s finest stars for various collaborations. It’s definitely a good look for the genres as it gives them more leverage to different markets, even after the seasons is done. Carnival is an International brand with different cities and countries around the world hosting their own. With more interest in the Caribbean culture over the years, it’s a pivotal moment for Dancehall and Soca to make a greater push for the International market with these collaborations. For those unfamiliar, the Jamaican love affair with Soca and Carnival dates back to the 1940s at the University of the West Indies (Mona Campus), and the collaborations over time are just great moments in this ever growing union. With their feel good vibes and ability to bring people together, the collaborations will continue. Today we’re featuring a few of the Dancehall x Soca crossovers that are currently making waves on the scene.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Barbara Jones – Walk Through This World With Me (1974)

In recognition of March being “Women’s History Month“, Oldies Sunday will be highlighting a few women who have made their contribution to the Jamaican music landscape in the early years. Our first entry comes from a person who was once considered the “Billie Holiday of Reggae Music“, and was a part of the 2nd wave of Reggae Artists in the 1970s, the late Barbara Jones. Today we look back at her single, “Walk Through This World With Me“. Produced by Alvin Ranglin, the single was released through the Producer’s GG’s Records in 1974,and is a cover of the late Country Music Artist George Jones’ 1967 hit.

Known for covering hit singles, “Walk Through” became one of Barbara’s popular songs to perform. While she has enjoyed delivering good music through the 1970s and 1980s, and toured with Jimmy Cliff, she made the move to performing Gospel Music since converting to Christianity in the 1990s. Jones continued the bless many with her music until she passed away in December 2014.

Closing out Black History Month and Reggae Month, one of our favourite Recording Artists Yanah emerges with new music for 2019! A song that’ll wake you up, she releases “The Root“! Produced by Kone, Yanah celebrates Melanin and the Mother Divine, reminds us all that we are Kings and Queens, and we should always remember where we’re coming from. Know yourself and your history, never let them white wash your brain! Accompanying the new music is a visual brought to us by C. Mills Art with Creative Direction by Kimberley Irons (will update you on that later). With so many having identity crises and those facing terrible situations because of their skin colour, you need songs like this to bring folks together and enforce a new level of consciousness. Happy Sunday! Today we celebrate a lil Dancehall, and a lil Soca with our “Oldies Sunday” selection. Going back to the year 1993, we tune in to the late Byron Lee and his Band The Dragonaires’ hit, “Dance Hall Soca“! Featuring Soca Artist Preacher and Dancehall Artist/Football Coach Admiral Bailey, we get the best of both worlds as Dancehall and Soca fans alike joined forces and partied away without care! The track was featured on the Band’s 1993 album of the same name, and it’s a fun song that became one of Byron Lee’s signature hits, and you could say one of the songs that paved the way for many Dancehall/Soca collaborations over the years. With the superb instrumentations from the Band, and Preacher and Bailey’s contributions, you could wave your rag, wine, and do the “Soca Bogle” to your heart’s content. The power of Reggae/Dancehall music continues spread and influence the world over, and it’s no surprise when many folks outside of Jamaica find themselves becoming Artists. Today we feature Orti, a French Recording Artist, with the music video for his single “Breaking Bad“. Bringing some Dancehall “bad man” vibes and a lil influence from the hit TV Series (“Breaking Bad“), Orti can be seen making boss moves throughout the video as he oversees his operations. We love the bilingual delivery on this as well, and the production will definitely have you keeping it on repeat.
