After dropping Raine Seville’s “Willow Tree” yesterday, I felt it was only right to play one of the original songs. Today I feature a song by the late Alton Ellis a.k.a. the GodFather of Rocksteady. Titled “Willow Tree” and produced by Coxsone Records in 1967, this was a cover of Chuck Jackson’s “My Willow Tree” which was done in 1962 but never made it to the music charts. This song is about finding new song all while sparing the “Willow Tree” from sharing the pain of past failed relationships.
“Willow Tree” was added to Alton Ellis’ “Mr Soul of Jamaica” which was regarded as one of his most definitive works. With his unique delivery, Alton Ellis gave the song alot of soul that you could feel and relate to. Over the years he released many singles and albums and collaborating with the likes of John Holt, his sister the late Hortense Ellis, The Heptones, Lloyd Daley and many others.
Alton Ellis went on to have a much celebrated career which included receiving the Order of Distinction in 2004 until being diagnosed with cancer of the lymph glands. He later succumbed to the disease and passed away in 2008 leaving behind a legacy that will surpass many generations.
Thank You Alton Ellis for the timeless classic. Rest in Peace.
